Abstract

A valve assembly for the sealed reception of an elongated object is provided. The assembly includes a valve body defining at least one opening configured and dimensioned to permit entry of an elongated object and defining a central longitudinal axis, and an elongated seal member having a resilient sealing structure and defining an aperture in general alignment with the opening of the valve body whereby the aperture is configured and dimensioned such that upon insertion of the object into the aperture, the resilient sealing structure resiliently engages the outer surface of the object in a tight manner. The sealing structure includes a plurality of elongated bristle members attached to the seal member. The bristle members are positioned to engage the elongated object upon at least partial insertion of the elongated object into the valve body. Each bristle member is adapted to be displaced relative to the longitudinal axis to facilitate expansion of the aperture of the seal member upon entry of the elongated object therein.

Claims (17)

1. An assembly for sealed reception of a surgical object into a body cavity of a patient, which comprises:

a housing;

a sleeve connected to the housing and dimensioned for introduction through body tissue to provide access to an underlying surgical site in a body cavity, the sleeve defining a longitudinal axis, the housing and the sleeve defining a longitudinal passage for reception and passage of the surgical object;

a first seal member detachably mounted to the housing for forming a substantial sealing relation with the surgical object passing through longitudinal passage of the housing and the sleeve, the first seal member including a plurality of flexible bristle members mounted about the longitudinal axis to extend inwardly relative to the longitudinal axis, at least some of the bristle members configured to define an internal longitudinal taper whereby an internal dimension defined by the internal taper decreases along the longitudinal axis from proximal to distal, at least some of the remaining bristle members being arranged to define a longitudinal opening distal of the internal longitudinal taper and having an internal dimension which is substantially constant along the longitudinal axis, the internal longitudinal taper leading to the longitudinal opening; and

a second seal member for sealing the longitudinal passage in the absence of the surgical object.

2. The assembly according to claim 1 wherein the at least some of the bristle members are coaxially mounted about the longitudinal axis to define the internal taper having a general frusto-conical configuration.

3. The assembly according to claim 2 wherein the at least some of the remaining bristle members are coaxially mounted about the longitudinal axis to define a substantially annular longitudinal opening, the internal taper leading to the substantially annular longitudinal opening.

4. The assembly according to claim 2 wherein the at least some of the remaining bristle members are coaxially mounted about the longitudinal axis to define a substantially circular longitudinal opening.

5. The assembly according to claim 1 wherein the first seal member includes a substrate, the bristle members extending from the substrate toward the longitudinal axis.

6. The assembly according to claim 5 wherein the first seal member is disposed within a seal housing, wherein the seal housing includes inner wall portions defining an internal recess, the first seal member being disposed in the internal recess.

7. The assembly according to claim 6 wherein the first seal member is adapted to laterally move within the internal recess.

8. The assembly according to claim 1 wherein the bristle members comprise an elastomeric material.

9. The assembly according to claim 1 wherein the longitudinal passage is configured to receive a surgical instrument.

10. The assembly according to claim 1 wherein the second seal member includes a cannula seal.

11. The assembly according to claim 1 wherein the longitudinal passage is configured to receive an instrument ranging between about 4 mm to about 12 mm in diameter.

12. The assembly according to claim 1 wherein the first seal member is configured to receive a surgical instrument.

13. The assembly according to claim 1 wherein the second seal member includes a duckbill seal.
