Abstract

A printing system that includes a source which emits UV radiation to polymerize a fluid that is deposited onto a substrate by one or more print heads. The source emits low energy UV radiation sufficient to set the fluid to a quasi-fluid, non-hardened state.

Claims (109)

1. A printing system comprising:

a printhead array comprising a plurality of ink jet print heads for depositing a printing fluid onto a substrate to form images on the substrate; and

a source which emits pulsed UV radiation to polymerize the printing fluid deposited onto the substrate by the plurality of ink jet print heads, wherein an energy level of the radiation emitted by the source is adjustable by varying the pulse rate of the source, wherein the fluid is first set and subsequently cured, wherein the lamps are moveable relative to the carriage.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the level is adjustable from a low level to set the fluid to a higher level to cure the field.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the source emits radiation at a level to set the fluid.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the source emits radiation at a level to cure the fluid.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the fluid is an ink.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the source comprises one or more UV lamps.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the source comprises one or more LEDs.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the printhead array comprises a carriage which scans in a direction substantially orthogonal to the direction of movement of the substrate.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the carriage is able to move bidirectionally.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein the source is moveable relative to the carriage in a direction substantially parallel to the direction of movement of the substrate.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the source comprises a pair of lamps mounted to a carriage of the printing system, the carriage being coupled to a rail system so that the carriage moves along the rail system to scan across the substrate.

12. A printing system comprising:

a printhead array comprising a plurality of ink jet print heads for depositing a printing fluid onto a substrate to form images on the substrate; and

a source which emits pulsed UV radiation to polymerize the printing fluid deposited onto the substrate by the plurality of ink jet print heads, wherein an energy level of the radiation emitted by the source is adjustable by varying the pulse rate of the source, wherein the fluid is first set and subsequently cured, wherein the source comprises a first UV source which sets the liquid and a second UV energy source which cures the liquid, the first UV source being positioned adjacent to the print heads and the second UV source being positioned adjacent to a trailing side of the first UV energy source.

13. A printing system comprising:

a printhead array comprising a plurality of ink jet print heads for depositing a printing fluid onto a substrate to form images on the substrate; and

a source which emits pulsed UV radiation to polymerize the printing fluid deposited onto the substrate by the plurality of ink let print heads, wherein an energy level of the radiation emitted by the source is adjustable by varying the pulse rate of the source, wherein the fluid is first set and subsequently cured, wherein the source comprises one or more setting sources, each setting source being capable of setting the fluid and being positioned adjacent to a respective series of print heads, the source further including a curing source capable of curing the fluid, the curing source being positioned at a trailing end of the array of print heads and the setting energy sources.

14. A printing system comprising:

a printhead array comprising a plurality of ink jet print heads for depositing a printing fluid onto a substrate to form images on the substrate; and

a source which emits pulsed UV radiation to polymerize the printing fluid deposited onto the substrate by the plurality of ink jet print heads, wherein an energy level of the radiation emitted by the source is adjustable by varying the pulse rate of the source, wherein the fluid is first set and subsequently cured, wherein the source is mounted laterally adjacent to the print heads relative to the movement of the substrate, the source emitting a set energy sufficient to cause the fluid to set to a non-hardened, quasi-fluid state, the set energy being substantially less than a cure energy required to fully cure the fluid to a hardened state.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the set energy is about 50% or less than the cure energy.

16. The system of claim 14 , wherein the radiation source emits continuous UV radiation.

17. The system of claim 14 , wherein the source comprises a mercury arc lamp.

18. The system of claim 14 , further comprising a second source located adjacent to a trailing edge of the print heads, the second source emitting an energy sufficient to cure the fluid.

19. A printing system comprising:

a printhead array comprising a plurality of ink jet print heads for depositing a printing fluid onto a substrate to form images on the substrate; and

a source comprising a pair of lamps mounted to a carriage of the printing system, the carriage being coupled to a rail system so that the carriage moves along the rail system to scan across the substrate, wherein the source emits pulsed UV radiation to polymerize the printing fluid deposited onto the substrate by the plurality of ink jet print heads, and wherein an energy level of the radiation emitted by the source is adjustable by varying the pulse rate of the source, wherein the lamps are moveable relative to the carriage.

20. The system of claim 19 , wherein the level is adjustable from a low level to set the fluid to a higher level to cure the field.

21. The system of claim 19 , wherein the fluid is first set and subsequently cured.

22. The system of claim 19 , wherein the source emits radiation at a level to set the fluid.

23. The system of claim 19 , wherein the source emits radiation at a level to cure the fluid.

24. The system of claim 19 , wherein the fluid is an ink.

25. The system of claim 19 , wherein The source comprises one or more UV lamps.

26. The system of claim 19 , wherein the source comprises one or more LEDs.

27. The system of claim 19 , wherein the printhead array comprises a carriage which scans in a direction substantially orthogonal to the direction of movement of the substrate.

28. The system of claim 27 , wherein the carriage is able to move bidirectionally.

29. The system of claim 27 , wherein the source is moveable relative to the carriage in a direction substantially parallel to the direction of movement of the substrate.

30. The system of claim 19 , wherein the source comprises a first UV source which sets the liquid and a second UV energy source which cures the liquid, the first UV source being positioned adjacent to the print heads and the second UV source being positioned adjacent to a trailing side of the first UV energy source.

31. The system of claim 19 , wherein the source comprises one or more setting sources, each setting source being capable of setting the fluid and being positioned adjacent to a respective series of print heads, the source further including a curing source capable of curing the fluid, the curing source being positioned at a trailing end of the array of print heads and the setting energy sources.

32. The system of claim 19 , wherein the source is mounted laterally adjacent to the print heads relative to the movement of the substrate, the source emitting a set energy sufficient to cause the fluid to set to a non-hardened, quasi-fluid state, the set energy being substantially less than a cure energy required to fully cure the fluid to a hardened state.

33. The system of claim 32 , wherein the set energy is about 50% or less than the cure energy.

34. The system of claim 32 , wherein the radiation source emits continuous UV radiation.

35. The system of claim 32 , further comprising a second source located adjacent to a trailing edge of the print heads, the second source emitting an energy sufficient to cure the fluid.

36. The system of claim 19 , wherein the source comprises a mercury arc lamp.

37. A printing system comprising:

a printhead array comprising a plurality of ink jet print heads for depositing a printing fluid onto a substrate to form images on the substrate; and

a source comprising a first UV source which sets the liquid and a second UV energy source which cures the liquid, the first UV source being positioned adjacent to the print heads and the second UV source being positioned adjacent to a trailing side of the first UV energy source, wherein the source emits pulsed UV radiation to polymerize the printing fluid deposited onto the substrate by the plurality of ink jet print heads, and wherein an energy level of the radiation emitted by the source is adjustable by varying the pulse rate of the source.

38. The system of claim 37 , wherein the level is adjustable from a low level to set the fluid to a higher level to cure the field.

39. The system of claim 37 , wherein the fluid is first set and subsequently cured.

40. The system of claim 37 , wherein the source emits radiation at a level to set the fluid.

41. The system of claim 37 , wherein the source emits radiation at a level to cure the fluid.

42. The system of claim 37 , wherein the fluid is an ink.

43. The system of claim 37 , wherein the source comprises one or more UV lamps.

44. The system of claim 37 , wherein the source comprises one or more LEDs.

45. The system of claim 37 , wherein the printhead array comprises a carriage which scans in a direction substantially orthogonal to the direction of movement of the substrate.

46. The system of claim 45 , wherein the carriage is able to move bidirectionally.

47. The system of claim 45 , wherein the source is moveable relative to the carriage in a direction substantially parallel to the direction of movement of the substrate.

48. The system of claim 37 , wherein the source comprises a pair of lamps mounted to a carriage of the printing system, the carriage being coupled to a rail system so that the carriage moves along the rail system to scan across the substrate.

49. The system of claim 48 , wherein the lamps are moveable relative to the carriage.

50. The system of claim 37 , wherein the source comprises one or more setting sources, each setting source being capable of setting the fluid and being positioned adjacent to a respective series of print heads, the source further including a curing source capable of curing the fluid, the curing source being positioned at a trailing end of the array of print heads and the setting energy sources.

51. The system of claim 37 , wherein the source is mounted laterally adjacent to the print heads relative to the movement of the substrate, the source emitting a set energy sufficient to cause the fluid to set to a non-hardened, quasi-fluid state, the set energy being substantially less than a cure energy required to fully cure the fluid to a hardened state.

52. The system of claim 51 , wherein the set energy is about 50% or less than the cure energy.

53. The system of claim 51 , wherein the radiation source emits continuous UV radiation.

54. The system of claim 51 , further comprising a second source located adjacent to a trailing edge of the print heads, the second source emitting an energy sufficient to cure the fluid.

55. The system of claim 37 , wherein the source comprises a mercury arc lamp.

56. A printing system comprising:

a printhead array comprising a plurality of ink jet print heads for depositing a printing fluid onto a substrate to form images on the substrate; and

a source comprising one or more setting sources, each setting source being capable of setting the fluid and being positioned adjacent to a respective series of print heads, the source further including a curing source capable of curing the fluid, the curing source being positioned at a trailing end of the array of print heads and the setting energy sources, wherein the source which emits pulsed UV radiation to polymerize the printing fluid deposited onto the substrate by the plurality of ink jet print heads, and wherein an energy level of the radiation emitted by the source is adjustable by varying the pulse rate of the source.

57. The system of claim 56 , wherein the level is adjustable from a low level to set the fluid to a higher level to cure the field.

58. The system of claim 56 , wherein the fluid is first set and subsequently cured.

59. The system of claim 56 , wherein the source emits radiation at a level to set the fluid.

60. The system of claim 56 , wherein the source emits radiation at a level to cure the fluid.

61. The system of claim 56 , wherein the fluid is an ink.

62. The system of claim 56 , wherein the source comprises one or more UV lamps.

63. The system of claim 56 , wherein the source comprises one or more LEDs.

64. The system of claim 56 , wherein the printhead array comprises a carriage which scans in a direction substantially orthogonal to the direction of movement of the substrate.

65. The system of claim 64 , wherein the carriage is able to move bidirectionally.

66. The system of claim 64 , wherein the source is moveable relative to the carriage in a direction substantially parallel to the direction of movement of the substrate.

67. The system of claim 56 , wherein the source comprises a pair of lamps mounted to a carriage of the printing system, the carriage being coupled to a rail system so that the carriage moves along the rail system to scan across the substrate.

68. The system of claim 67 , wherein the lamps are moveable relative to the carriage.

69. The system of claim 56 , wherein the source comprises a first UV source which sets the liquid and a second UV energy source which cures the liquid, the first UV source being positioned adjacent to the print heads and the second UV source being positioned adjacent to a trailing side of the first UV energy source.

70. The system of claim 56 , wherein the source is mounted laterally adjacent to the print heads relative to the movement of the substrate, the source emitting a set energy sufficient to cause the fluid to set to a non-hardened, quasi-fluid state, the set energy being substantially less than a cure energy required to fully cure the fluid to a hardened state.

71. The system of claim 70 , wherein the set energy is about 50% or less than the cure energy.

72. The system of claim 70 , wherein the radiation source emits continuous UV radiation.

73. The system of claim 70 , further comprising a second source located adjacent to a trailing edge of the print heads, the second source emitting an energy sufficient to cure the fluid.

74. The system of claim 56 , wherein the source comprises a mercury arc lamp.

75. A printing system comprising:

a printhead array comprising a plurality of ink jet print heads for depositing a printing fluid onto a substrate to form images on the substrate; and

a source which emits pulsed UV radiation to polymerize the printing fluid deposited onto the substrate by the plurality of ink jet print heads, wherein an energy level of the radiation emitted by the source is adjustable by varying the pulse rate of the source, and wherein the source is mounted laterally adjacent to the print heads relative to the movement of the substrate, the source emitting a set energy sufficient to cause the fluid to set to a non-hardened, quasi-fluid state, the set energy being substantially less than a cure energy required to fully cure the fluid to a hardened state.

76. The system of claim 75 , wherein the level is adjustable from a low level to set the fluid to a higher level to cure the field.

77. The system of claim 75 , wherein the fluid is first set and subsequently cured.

78. The system of claim 75 , wherein the source emits radiation at a level to set the fluid.

79. The system of claim 75 , wherein the source emits radiation at a level to cure the fluid.

80. The system of claim 75 , wherein the fluid is an ink.

81. The system of claim 75 , wherein the source comprises one or more UV lamps.

82. The system of claim 75 , wherein the source comprises one or more LEDs.

83. The system of claim 75 , wherein the printhead array comprises a carriage which scans in a direction substantially orthogonal to the direction of movement of the substrate.

84. The system of claim 83 , wherein the carriage is able to move bidirectionally.

85. The system of claim 83 , wherein the source is moveable relative to the carriage in a direction substantially parallel to the direction of movement of the substrate.

86. The system of claim 75 , wherein the source comprises a pair of lamps mounted to a carriage of the printing system, the carriage being coupled to a rail system so that the carriage moves along the rail system to scan across the substrate.

87. The system of claim 86 , wherein the lamps are moveable relative to the carriage.

88. The system of claim 75 , wherein the source comprises a first UV source which sets the liquid and a second UV energy source which cures the liquid, the first UV source being positioned adjacent to the print heads and the second UV source being positioned adjacent to a trailing side of the first UV energy source.

89. The system of claim 75 , wherein the source comprises one or more setting sources, each setting source being capable of setting the fluid and being positioned adjacent to a respective series of print heads, the source further including a curing source capable of curing the fluid, the curing source being positioned at a trailing end of the array of print heads and the setting energy sources.

90. The system of claim 89 , wherein the set energy is about 50% or less than the cure energy.

91. The system of claim 89 , wherein the radiation source emits continuous UV radiation.

92. The system of claim 89 , further comprising a second source located adjacent to a trailing edge of the print heads, the second source emitting an energy sufficient to cure the fluid.

93. The system of claim 75 , wherein the source comprises a mercury arc lamp.
