Abstract

The present invention provides systems, methods, and devices for using acoustic energy.

Claims (24)

1. A method for treating at least one sample using acoustic energy, the method comprising:

providing the at least one sample in a vessel, the vessel being located in a medium and the vessel being held by a vessel holder;

generating focused acoustic energy through the medium to the at least one sample in the vessel, the focused acoustic energy having a frequency of between about 100 kilohertz and about 100 megahertz and having a focal zone having a width of less than about 2 centimeters;

exposing the at least one sample to an initial wave of the focused acoustic energy so as to produce a reflected wave;

controlling at least one of the focused acoustic energy and a location of the at least one sample relative to the focused acoustic field such that the at least one sample is selectively exposed to the focused acoustic energy and the initial wave and the reflected wave are in phase with one another.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein a round trip path length of the focused acoustic energy is an integral number of acoustic wavelengths.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the round trip path length of the focused acoustic energy is changed from physically changing the location of the at least one sample relative to the focused acoustic field.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein controlling the focused acoustic energy comprises setting the frequency of the focused acoustic energy after sweeping through a range of frequencies.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein controlling the focused acoustic energy comprises changing temperature of the medium.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein controlling at least one of the focused acoustic energy and the location of the at least one sample relative to the focused acoustic field comprises automatically changing at least one of sample position, focused acoustic energy frequency, and medium temperature based on a desired effect.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the desired effect comprises degassing.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein the desired effect comprises membrane lysing.

9. The method of claim 6 , wherein the at least one sample comprises DNA and the desired effect comprises shearing the DNA in the at least one sample.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the width corresponds to a diameter of the focal zone.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the focal zone is cigar-shaped.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the focal zone is ellipsoidal shaped.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the focal zone has a width of less than about 1 centimeter.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the focal zone has a width of less than about 1 millimeter.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the focused acoustic energy includes multiple focal zones,

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one sample is a fluid.

17. The method of claim 1 , wherein the focused acoustic energy propagates with sufficient energy to induce cavitation in the medium.

18. The method of claim 1 , wherein the medium is a liquid.

19. The method of claim 1 , wherein the medium is a semi-solid.

20. The method of claim 1 , further comprising propagating the focused acoustic energy through a liquid medium exterior to the vessel, the focused acoustic energy originating from an acoustic source spaced from and exterior to the vessel.
