Abstract

Photoplethysmography (PPG) is obtained using one red (e.g., 660 nm) and one infrared (e.g., 880 to 940 nm) light emitting diode with a single photo diode in combination with a pressure transducer thereby allowing both CVP and SpO2 to be measured simultaneously. The system also includes sensors capable of measuring position, angle and/or movement of the sensor or patient. Once the PPG signal is acquired, high pass adaptive and/or notch filtering can be used with one element of the filter from the red and infrared signals used to measure the arterial changes needed to compute SpO2 and the other element of the signal can be used to measure CVP changes.

Claims (15)

1. A non-invasive method for measuring central venous pressure changes comprising:

monitoring photoplethysmography with a detector including a pressure sensor placed on a patient's forehead to measure venous pressure changes;

monitoring the position of the patient; and

filtering the photoplethysmography signal and, using a processor, using information from the measured venous pressures changes from the pressure sensor and the position of the patient to compute central venous pressure changes.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein monitoring the position of the patient comprises monitoring the position of the patient's head.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising measuring breathing frequency.

4. The method of claim 1 further comprising filtering the photoplethysmography signal using information from the measured arterial pressures changes from the pressure sensor and the position of the patient to compute effort arousal waves.

5. A non-invasive method for measuring central venous pressure changes comprising:

monitoring photoplethysmography of a patient;

monitoring venous pulsation with a pressure sensor placed on the patient's forehead;

monitoring the position of the patient and movement of the patient with one or more position sensors; and

using a processor to determine central venous pressure from the monitored photoplethysmography of the patient and the monitored position of the patient and movement of the patient.

6. The method of claim 5 further comprising filtering the photoplethysmography signal using information from the monitored venous pulsations and the movement of the patient to compute effort arousal waves.

7. The method of claim 5 wherein determining central venous pressure further comprises using the monitored venous pulsation in the determination of the central venous pressure.

8. The method of claim 5 further comprising measuring breathing frequency and also using the measured breathing frequency in computing the central venous pressure changes.
