Abstract

An automated banking machine ( 10 ) is operative to carry out financial transactions and includes a user interface ( 15 ). The user interface includes a card reader ( 16 ) which is operative to read data on user cards which identify user's financial accounts. A fascia of the machine includes a keypad ( 404, 438, 458 ) through which users input confidential data. Covers ( 400, 422, 430 ) prevent unauthorized persons from viewing confidential inputs to the keypad. Alternatively, movable panels ( 462, 464 ) are movable to prevent unauthorized viewing of confidential inputs. Alternatively a keypad cover is selectively collapsible to prevent digit access. A visual indicator is operative to indicate to a user that keypad inputs are being encrypted. Disinfecting techniques may be used to disinfect manual contact surfaces of the machine.

Claims (30)

1. A method comprising:

(a) operating at least one processor in a cash dispensing automated banking machine to conduct a transaction through operation of the machine, wherein conducting the transaction includes:

(a)(i) reading a card through operation of a card reader of the machine;

(a)(ii) receiving at least one confidential input from a machine user through a keypad of the machine,

wherein the at least one processor is operative to cause the keypad to encrypt

signals output by the keypad corresponding to inputs therethrough

only during a first period of the transaction when the at least one processor requires the at least one confidential input for the transaction to continue;

(b) operating the at least one processor to analyze signals causing a display to provide outputs, and to determine that the display is providing at least one output requesting at least one confidential input during a second period of the transaction when the at least one processor does not require the at least one confidential input for the transaction to continue.

2. The method according to claim 1 wherein in (a) and in (b), the at least one confidential input comprises a personal identification number (PIN).

3. The method according to claim 2 and further comprising:

(c) responsive to the determination in (b), operating the at least one processor to cause the keypad to encrypt output signals corresponding to inputs therethrough.

4. The method according to claim 3 and further comprising:

(d) responsive to the determination in (b), operating the at least one processor to cause the machine to send at least one message to at least one remote computer indicating an abnormal condition at the machine.

5. The method according to claim 4 wherein (b) includes operating character recognition software in the at least one processor.

6. The method according to claim 5 wherein the automated banking machine includes at least one indicator, and further comprising:

(e) operating the at least one indicator responsive to the keypad being operative to encrypt keypad output signals that correspond to inputs through the keypad.

7. The method according to claim 6 wherein the at least one indicator includes a visual indicator, wherein (e) includes illuminating the visual indicator.

8. The method according to claim 7 wherein the keypad includes at least one encryption key, wherein in at least one of (a)(ii) and (c), keypad output signals corresponding to at least one keypad input are encrypted responsive to the at least one encryption key.

9. The method according to claim 1 wherein the keypad includes a plurality of manually actuatable keys, and wherein the automated banking machine includes a cover overlying at least some of the manually actuatable keys of the keypad, and further comprising:

changing the properties of visibility through at least one portion of the cover responsive to operation of the at least one processor.

10. The method according to claim 1 wherein the keypad includes a plurality of manually actuatable keys, and wherein the banking machine includes a cover overlying at least some of the manually actuatable keys of the keypad, and further comprising:

changing the cover between

an operative condition wherein all of the manually actuatable keys of the keypad are digit accessible,

and

a collapsed condition wherein at least one manually actuatable key of the keypad is not digit accessible,

responsive to operation of the at least one processor.

11. The method according to claim 8 wherein (a) further includes:

(a)(iii) dispensing cash from the machine.

12. The method according to claim 1 wherein (a) further includes:

(a)(iii) dispensing cash from the machine.
