Water leak detection and prevention systems and methods
View Patent ↗Water leak detection and prevention systems and methods in which water is only delivered to the water pipes in the building when a faucet or appliance demands water and water is delivered through a normally closed shut off water valve. During the period that the main water is shut off, the water pressure in the water pipes is continuously monitored to detect a water leak in the building. Detection of a leak causes an alarm to be sounded and a continued closure of the shut off valve.
1. A method of protecting a home or business building from flooding caused by a leak or rupture in the building plumbing comprising
enabling each faucet and water using appliance in said building to demand a normally closed shut off valve to open and connect the building plumbing to a water main,
disabling each said faucet and water using appliance when a pressure change in the water lines of the building is detected during the interval of times when said shut off valve is closed and said building is disconnected from said water main.
2. The method of claim 1 wherein each said faucet and water using appliance are disabled after a preset timer interval initiated by a demand from a faucet or water using appliance.
3. A method of detecting a leak in the plumbing of a building comprising monitoring the water pressure downstream of a water main and within the plumbing of the building for a decrease in water pressure during periods that no water is flowing into the plumbing from the water main or out of said plumbing in response to a water demand within the building, automatically preventing entry of water from the water main in response to a decrease in pressure; wherein opening of a water-using device interrupts said monitoring of said water pressure.
4. The method of claim 3 wherein opening of a water-using device comprises opening of a faucet or the water inlet of an appliance.
5. The method of claim 3 wherein the decrease in pressure sounds an alarm.
