Abstract

A method and apparatus for converting a flitch into sheets of veneer. The method and apparatus include providing a drive mechanism which causes relative motion of a knife in contact with the flitch. The relative motion is relatively slower during one part of the cutting stroke and is relatively faster during another part of the cutting stroke.

Claims (12)

1. A veneer slicer including a knife, a flitch table for supporting a flitch for movement relative to the knife to slice veneer from the flitch, a flitch table support for movably supporting the flitch table, at least one of a fluid motor and an electric motor coupled between the flitch table and the flitch table support, and a supporting framework operatively coupled to the flitch table support for movably supporting the flitch table support and a prime mover for moving the flitch table support relative to the supporting framework, simultaneous actuation of the prime mover and the at least one of a fluid motor and an electric motor providing compound motion of the flitch relative to the knife during the cutting stroke.

2. The veneer slicer of claim 1 including at least one guide on one of the flitch table and the flitch table support and at least one follower on the other of the flitch table and the flitch table support, the at least one follower mounted on the at least one guide for movably supporting the flitch table from the flitch table support.

3. The veneer slicer of claim 2 wherein the at least one guide extends generally horizontally to guide the flitch table horizontally with respect to the flitch table support.

4. The veneer slicer of claim 1 wherein the at least one of a fluid motor and an electric motor comprises a fluid motor.

5. The veneer slicer of claim 4 including at least one guide on one of the flitch table and the flitch table support and at least one follower on the other of the flitch table and the flitch table support, the at least one follower mounted on the at least one guide for movably supporting the flitch table from the flitch table support.

6. The veneer slicer of claim 5 wherein the at least one guide extends generally horizontally to guide the flitch table horizontally with respect to the flitch table support.

7. The veneer slicer of claim 4 wherein the fluid motor comprises a hydraulic motor.

8. The veneer slicer of claim 7 including at least one guide on one of the flitch table and the flitch table support and at least one follower on the other of the flitch table and the flitch table support, the at least one follower mounted on the at least one guide for movably supporting the flitch table from the flitch table support.

9. The veneer slicer of claim 8 wherein the at least one guide extends generally horizontally to guide the flitch table horizontally with respect to the flitch table support.

10. The veneer slicer of claim 7 wherein the hydraulic motor comprises multiple hydraulic motors.

11. The veneer slicer of claim 10 including at least one guide on one of the flitch table and the flitch table support and at least one follower on the other of the flitch table and the flitch table support, the at least one follower mounted on the at least one guide for movably supporting the flitch table from the flitch table support.

12. The veneer slicer of claim 11 wherein the at least one guide extends generally horizontally to guide the flitch table horizontally with respect to the flitch table support.
