Abstract

A highly portable, high-powered infrared laser source is produced by intermittent operation of a quantum cascade laser power regulated to a predetermined operating range that permits passive cooling. The regulation process may boost battery voltage allowing the use of more compact, low-voltage batteries.

Claims (33)

1. A low power consumption quantum cascade laser comprising:

a housing;

a cooling element coupled to the housing;

a solid-state quantum cascade laser element thermally attached to the cooling element;

a battery; and

a quantum cascade laser driver circuit receiving electrical power from the battery and providing a set of feedback controlled pulses to the solid-state quantum cascade laser element having a duty cycle of less than approximately 50 percent; wherein the quantum cascade laser driver circuit provides a DC-to-DC boost converter providing power to the quantum cascade laser element using feedback measuring a power consumed by the quantum cascade laser element to control a duty cycle of the DC-to-DC converter.

2. The quantum cascade laser of claim 1 , wherein the feedback controlled pulses are based on a sensing of current to the quantum cascade laser wherein the current of the pulses is controlled.

3. The quantum cascade laser of claim 1 , wherein the feedback controlled pulses are based on a sensing of optical output of the quantum cascade laser so that the optical output is controlled.

4. The quantum cascade laser of claim 1 , wherein the cooling element is passive.

5. The quantum cascade laser of claim 1 , wherein the housing is airtight.

6. The quantum cascade laser of claim 1 , wherein the battery provides a voltage of less than approximately 9 volts.

7. The quantum cascade laser of claim 1 , wherein a volume of the housing is less than 10 cm 3 .

8. A laser targeting system comprising: (i) a rifle having a bore, and (ii) the laser of claim 1 attached to the rifle; wherein the laser provides an infrared laser beam having a wavelength greater than approximately 3 microns and substantially aligned with the bore of the rifle.

9. A laser spectroscope comprising: (i) an infrared imaging system that provides an image, and (ii) the laser of claim 1 directing an infrared laser beam having a wavelength greater than approximately 3 microns, the laser beam impinging on the image.

10. A laser assembly comprising:

a housing;

a quantum cascade laser element coupled to the housing; and

a driver circuit directing a set of pulses of power to the quantum cascade laser element having a duty cycle of less than approximately 50 percent; wherein the driver circuit provides a DC-to-DC boost converter providing power to the quantum cascade laser element using feedback measuring a power consumed by the quantum cascade laser element to control a duty cycle of the DC-to-DC converter.

11. The laser assembly of claim 10 wherein the pulses are based on a sensing of current to the quantum cascade laser.

12. The laser assembly of claim 10 wherein the pulses are based on a sensing of optical output of the quantum cascade laser so that the optical output is controlled.

13. A laser targeting system comprising: (i) a rifle having a bore, and (ii) the laser assembly of claim 10 attached to the rifle; wherein the laser provides an infrared laser beam having a wavelength greater than approximately 3 microns and substantially aligned with the bore of the rifle.

14. A laser spectroscope comprising: (i) an infrared imaging system that provides an image, and (ii) the laser assembly of claim 10 directing an infrared laser beam having a wavelength greater than approximately 3 microns, the laser beam impinging on the image.

15. The laser assembly of claim 10 further comprising a passive cooling element in thermal communication with the quantum cascade laser element, and a battery that supplies power to the quantum cascade laser element.

16. The method for generating a laser beam comprising the steps of:

providing a quantum cascade laser element; and

directing a set of feedback controlled pulses of power to the quantum cascade laser element with a DC-to-DC boost converter having a duty cycle of less than approximately 50 percent;

wherein the step of directing includes the step of dynamically adjusting the power to the quantum cascade laser to hold the quantum cascade laser within an operating range allowing for passive cooling of the quantum cascade laser. directing includes the pulses being based on a sensing of current to the quantum cascade laser.

17. The method of claim 16 wherein the step of directing includes the pulses being based on a sensing of optical output of the quantum cascade laser.

18. The method of claim 16 wherein the step of directing includes the pulses being based on a sensing of optical output of the quantum cascade laser so that the optical output is controlled.

19. The laser assembly of claim 16 further comprising a passive cooling element in thermal communication with the quantum cascade laser element, and a battery that supplies power to the quantum cascade laser element.

20. A laser targeting system comprising: (i) a rifle having a bore, and (ii) the laser assembly of claim 16 attached to the rifle; wherein the laser assembly provides an infrared laser beam having a wavelength greater than approximately 3 microns and substantially aligned with the bore of the rifle.

21. A laser spectroscope comprising: (i) an infrared imaging system that provides an image, and (ii) the laser assembly of claim 16 directing an infrared laser beam having a wavelength greater than approximately 3 microns, the laser beam impinging on the image.

22. A laser spectroscope comprising: (i) an infrared imaging system that provides an image, and (ii) the laser assembly of claim 16 directing an infrared laser beam at the image.
