Abstract

Binders to produce or promote cohesion in non or loosely assembled matter.

Claims (13)

1. A composition, comprising:

a nitrogeneous polymer binder disposed on a collection of cellulosic fibers, wherein

(i) the nitrogeneous polymer binder includes melanoidins generated from the reaction of a carbohydrate reactant and an amine reactant,

(ii) a portion of the melanoidins of the nitrogeneous polymer binder are cross-linked through a monomeric polycarboxylic acid reactant, and

(iii) the ratio of the number of moles of the monomeric polycarboxylic acid reactant to the number of moles of carbohydrate reactant is from about 1:4 to about 1:15.

2. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the carbohydrate reactant is a monosaccharide in its aldose or ketose form.

3. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the amine reactant is ammonia.

4. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the monomeric polycarboxylic acid is selected from a dicarboxylic acid, a tricarboxylic acid, a tetracarboxylic acid, and a pentacarboxylic acid or anhydrides or combinations thereof.

5. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the carbohydrate reactant is selected from the group consisting of dextrose, xylose, fructose, dihydoxyacetone, and mixtures thereof.

6. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the polycarboxylic acid reactant is selected from the group consisting of citric acid, maleic acid, tartaric acid, malic acid, succinic acid, and mixtures thereof.

7. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the polycarboxylic acid reactant is citric acid.

8. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the carbohydrate reactant is dextrose.

9. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the nitrogenous polymer binder is of the type formed in a dehydrated state.
