Abstract

A wireless receiver that sorts packets including a packet detector, multiple correlators, and multiple packet processors. Each correlator correlates a received signal according to packet type. Each packet processor processes the received signal according to packet type. A signal power detector may be provided to initially qualify the received signal as containing a packet, and the correlators determine whether a packet is present. The correlators may be configured for sequential or simultaneous correlation. For the simultaneous correlator configuration, a correlation monitor is provided to monitor correlation results to determine if the received signal contains a packet, and if so, to determine packet type. A low SNR packet detector may be provided which correlates the received signal to detect weak packet signals. The signal power detector may be omitted, where the correlators simultaneously monitor the received signal while a correlation monitor continuously monitors correlation results for packet detection.

Claims (61)

1. A wireless receiver comprising:

a multi-carrier correlator that correlates a received signal according to at least one characteristic of a multi-carrier signal and according to a first predetermined communication protocol, the first predetermined communication protocol including orthogonal frequency divisional multiplexing (OFDM);

a multi-carrier packet processor that processes the received signal if the multi-carrier correlator indicates a multi-carrier packet, according to the first predetermined communication protocol;

a single-carrier correlator that correlates the received signal according to at least one characteristic of a single-carrier signal and according to a second predetermined communication protocol;

a single-carrier packet processor that processes the received signal in response to the single-carrier correlator indicating a single-carrier packet, and according to the second predetermined communication protocol; and

a correlation monitor, coupled to the single-carrier and multi-carrier correlators, the correlation monitor configured to continuously monitor correlation results until a packet is detected.

2. The wireless receiver of claim 1 , further comprising an end of packet processor coupled to the single-carrier and multi-carrier packet processors.

3. The wireless receiver of claim 1 , wherein the single-carrier correlator comprises:

frequency offset adjust logic;

a Barker correlator coupled to the frequency offset adjust logic;

signal acquisition logic coupled to the Barker correlator; and

single-carrier detect fail (SFD) sequence search logic coupled to the signal acquisition logic.

4. The wireless receiver of claim 1 ,

wherein the correlation monitor is further configured to determine whether the received signal incorporates at least one of the following, based on correlation results: a single-carrier packet and a multi-carrier packet.

5. The wireless receiver of claim 1 , wherein the second predetermined communications protocol includes a wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi) protocol.

6. The wireless receiver of claim 1 , further comprising a signal power detector that monitors a power level of the received signal, the signal power detector providing a packet detect signal indicative of a possible packet.

7. The wireless receiver of claim 6 , wherein the signal power detector comprises:

an analog power estimator that receives the received signal in an analog format and provides an analog power estimation;

a digital power estimator that receives the received signal in a digital format and provides a digital power estimation; and

a power monitor, coupled to the analog power estimator and the digital power estimator, the power monitor configured to indicate a potential packet signal.

8. The wireless receiver of claim 1 , further comprising a non-packet processor that determines whether at least one power level threshold should be adjusted if the received signal does not include a packet.

9. A system, comprising:

means for correlating a received signal according to at least one characteristic of a multi-carrier signal and according to a first predetermined communications protocol, the first predetermined communications protocol including orthogonal frequency divisional multiplexing (OFDM);

means for processing the received signal in response to an indication of detection of a multi-carrier packet, according to the first predetermined communications protocol;

means for correlating the received signal according to at least one characteristic of a single-carrier signal and according to a predetermined second communications protocol;

means for processing the received signal in response to an indication of a single-carrier packet according to the predetermined second communications protocol; and

means for monitoring correlation results until a packet is detected.

10. The system of claim 9 , further comprising:

means for simultaneously correlating the received signal according to the first predetermined communications protocol; and

means for determining, based on correlation results, whether the received signal incorporates at least one of the following: a single-carrier packet and a multi-carrier packet.

11. The system of claim 9 , wherein the second predetermined communications protocol includes a wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi) protocol.

12. The system of claim 9 , further comprising:

means for monitoring a power level of the received signal; and

means for providing a packet detect signal indicative of a possible packet.

13. The system of claim 9 , further comprising:

means for receiving the received signal in an analog format; and

means for providing an analog power estimation.

14. The system of claim 9 , further comprising:

means for receiving the received signal in a digital format; and

means for providing a digital power estimation.

15. The system of claim 9 , further comprising means for determining whether at least one power level threshold is to be adjusted, based on a determination of whether the received signal does not include a packet.

16. A method, comprising:

correlating a received signal according to at least one characteristic of a multi-carrier signal and according to a first predetermined communications protocol, the first predetermined communications protocol including orthogonal frequency divisional multiplexing (OFDM);

processing the received signal in response to an indication of detection of a multi-carrier packet, according to the first predetermined communications protocol;

correlating the received signal according to at least one characteristic of a single-carrier signal and according to a predetermined second communications protocol;

processing the received signal in response to an indication of a single-carrier packet, according to the predetermined second communications protocol; and

monitoring correlation results until a packet is detected.

17. The method of claim 16 , further comprising:

simultaneously correlating the received signal according to the first predetermined communications protocol; and

determining, based on correlation results, whether the received signal incorporates at least one of the following: a single-carrier packet and a multi-carrier packet.

18. The method of claim 16 , wherein the second predetermined communications protocol includes a wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi) protocol.

19. The method of claim 16 , further comprising:

monitoring a power level of the received signal; and

providing a packet detect signal indicative of a possible packet.

20. The method of claim 16 , further comprising:

receiving the received signal in an analog format; and

providing an analog power estimation.

21. The method of claim 16 , further comprising:

receiving the received signal in a digital format; and

providing a digital power estimation.

22. The method of claim 16 , further comprising determining whether at least one power level threshold is to be adjusted, based on a determination of whether the received signal does not include a packet.
