Abstract

Electronic messages may be processed using a stamp authority by receiving an electronic message, identifying a stamp associated the message, determining if the stamp is valid, and, if the stamp is determined to be valid, distinguishing the message from messages with which a valid stamp is not identified.

Claims (82)

1. A computer-implemented method of processing electronic messages, the method comprising:

receiving a first electronic message that is associated with a stamp and that is addressed to a recipient, wherein associating the stamp with the first electronic message imposes an additional transaction cost on a sender of the first electronic message and appends, to the first electronic message, non-display stamp information that enables determination of whether the stamp associated with the first electronic message is valid;

receiving a second electronic message that is not associated with a stamp and that is addressed to the recipient, wherein sending the second electronic message that is not associated with a stamp does not impose the additional transaction cost on a sender of the second electronic message;

identifying the non-display stamp information appended to the first electronic message;

determining whether the stamp associated with the first electronic message is valid based on the identified non-display stamp information;

in response to a determination that the stamp associated with the first electronic message is valid, causing a user interface that is configured to display representations of electronic messages received by the recipient to display a first representation of the first electronic message in a first manner;

determining whether the second electronic message is associated with a stamp; and

in response to a determination that the second electronic message is not associated with a stamp, causing the user interface to display a second representation of the second electronic message in a second manner that is visually distinct from the first manner in which the first representation of the first electronic message is displayed in the user interface.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein:

the first electronic message was electronically associated with the stamp by a stamp authority system that is different from a sending system from which the first electronic message was originated;

receiving the first electronic message comprises receiving the first electronic message by a receiving system that is different from the stamp authority system and the sending system; and

determining whether the stamp associated with the first electronic message is valid based on the identified non-display stamp information comprises:

polling, by the receiving system, the stamp authority system to determine whether the stamp was validly issued by the stamp authority system;

receiving, by the receiving system from the stamp authority system, a response to the polling; and

determining whether the stamp associated with the first electronic message is valid based on the response to the polling received from the stamp authority system.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

placing the first electronic message in a first folder in the user interface in response to a determination that the stamp associated with the first electronic message is valid and placing the second electronic message in a second folder in the user interface that is different than the first folder in response to a determination that the second electronic message is not associated with a stamp.

The method of claim 3 wherein placing the first electronic message in the first folder in the user interface and placing the second electronic message in the second folder in the user interface that is different than the first folder comprises placing the first electronic message in the user's inbox and placing the second electronic message in an unsolicited message folder.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

in response to a determination that the stamp associated with the first electronic message is invalid, sending a response message indicating that the first electronic message was rejected because it was not validly stamped, the response message including a link that is configured to, upon user selection, allow a stamp to be associated with the first electronic message in a retransmission of the first electronic message.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

in response to a determination that the stamp associated with the first electronic message is valid, determining, from among multiple tiers of stamps, a tier of the stamp associated with the first electronic message, wherein each of the multiple tiers of stamps results in the first electronic message being handled by a receiving system in a different manner.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein the multiple tiers of stamps include:

a first tier of stamps that results in the first electronic message being placed, by the receiving system, in a folder for stamped messages;

a second tier of stamps that results in at least one of the first electronic message being placed, by the receiving system, in a higher priority folder that is different than the folder for stamped messages, a confirmation receipt for the first electronic message being transmitted by the receiving system, and a copy of the first electronic message being routed, by the receiving system, to an administrative assistant of the recipient of the first electronic message; and

a third tier of stamps that results in at least one of the first electronic message being forwarded, by the receiving system, to one or more additional devices of the recipient of the first electronic message, the first electronic message being forwarded, by the receiving system, to one or more additional messaging accounts of the recipient of the first electronic message, and the first electronic message being forwarded to a human operator in response to the first electronic message being rejected.

The method of claim 7 wherein the second tier of stamps results in the first electronic message being placed, by the receiving system, in a higher priority folder that is different than the folder for stamped messages, and the third tier of stamps results in the first electronic message being forwarded, by the receiving system, to one or more additional devices of the recipient of the first electronic message, further comprising:

in response to determining that the tier of the stamp associated with the first electronic message is the first tier, placing, by the receiving system, the first electronic message in the folder for stamped messages;

in response to determining that the tier of the stamp associated with the first electronic message is the second tier, placing, by the receiving system, the first electronic message in the higher priority folder that is different than the folder for stamped messages; and

in response to determining that the tier of the stamp associated with the first electronic message is the third tier, forwarding, by the receiving system, the first electronic message to one or more additional devices of the recipient of the first electronic message.

The method of claim 7 wherein the second tier of stamps results in the first electronic message being placed, by the receiving system, in a higher priority folder that is different than the folder for stamped messages, and the third tier of stamps results in the first electronic message being forwarded, by the receiving system, to one or more additional messaging accounts of the recipient of the first electronic message, further comprising:

in response to determining that the tier of the stamp associated with the first electronic message is the first tier, placing, by the receiving system, the first electronic message in the folder for stamped messages;

in response to determining that the tier of the stamp associated with the first electronic message is the second tier, placing, by the receiving system, the first electronic message in the higher priority folder that is different than the folder for stamped messages; and

in response to determining that the tier of the stamp associated with the first electronic message is the third tier, forwarding, by the receiving system, the first electronic message to one or more additional messaging accounts of the recipient of the first electronic message.

10. A system comprising:

at least one computer; and

a computer-readable medium coupled to the at least one computer having instructions stored thereon which, when executed by the at least one computer, cause the at least one computer to perform operations comprising:

receiving a first electronic message that is associated with a stamp and that is addressed to a recipient, wherein associating the stamp with the first electronic message imposes an additional transaction cost on a sender of the first electronic message and appends, to the first electronic message, non-display stamp information that enables determination of whether the stamp associated with the first electronic message is valid;

receiving a second electronic message that is not associated with a stamp and that is addressed to the recipient, wherein sending the second electronic message that is not associated with a stamp does not impose the additional transaction cost on a sender of the second electronic message;

identifying the non-display stamp information appended to the first electronic message;

determining whether the stamp associated with the first electronic message is valid based on the identified non-display stamp information;

in response to a determination that the stamp associated with the first electronic message is valid, causing a user interface that is configured to display representations of electronic messages received by the recipient to display a first representation of the first electronic message in a first manner;

determining whether the second electronic message is associated with a stamp; and

in response to a determination that the second electronic message is not associated with a stamp, causing the user interface to display a second representation of the second electronic message in a second manner that is visually distinct from the first manner in which the first representation of the first electronic message is displayed in the user interface.

11. A computer-implemented method of processing electronic messages using a stamp authority, the method comprising:

receiving an electronic message that was sent by a sender, that is addressed to a recipient, and that is associated with non-display stamp information, the non-display stamp information being generated by a stamp authority system that is different from a transmitting system from which the sender originated the electronic message and the stamp authority system imposing an additional transaction cost, borne by the sender, for generation of the non-display stamp information;

identifying the non-display stamp information associated with the electronic message;

determining whether the non-display stamp information associated with the electronic message represents a valid stamp that has been associated with the electronic message;

displaying, regardless of the determination, a representation of the electronic message in a user interface that is configured to display representations of electronic messages;

in response to a determination that the non-display stamp information associated with the electronic message represents a valid stamp that has been associated with the electronic message, handling the electronic message in a first manner; and

in response to a determination that the non-display stamp information associated with the electronic message does not represent a valid stamp that has been associated with the electronic message, handling the electronic message in a second manner that is distinct from the first manner.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein:

the electronic message was electronically associated with the non-display stamp information by the stamp authority system;

receiving the electronic message comprises receiving the electronic message by a receiving system that is different from the stamp authority system and the transmitting system; and

determining whether the non-display stamp information associated with the electronic message represents a valid stamp that has been associated with the electronic message comprises:

polling, by the receiving system, the stamp authority system to determine whether the non-display stamp information associated with the electronic message represents a valid stamp;

receiving, by the receiving system from the stamp authority system, a response to the polling; and

determining whether the non-display stamp information associated with the electronic message represents a valid stamp based on the response to the polling received from the stamp authority system.

13. The method of claim 11 wherein:

handling the electronic message in the first manner comprises placing the electronic message in a first folder in the user interface and

handling the electronic message in a second manner that is distinct from the first manner comprises placing the electronic message in a second folder in the user interface that is different than the first folder.

14. The method of claim 13 wherein:

placing the electronic message in the first folder in the user interface comprises placing the electronic message in the recipient's inbox; and

placing the electronic message in the second folder in the user interface that is different than the first folder comprises placing the electronic message in an unsolicited message folder.

15. The method of claim 11 wherein:

handling the electronic message in a second manner that is distinct from the first manner comprises sending, to the sender, a response message indicating that the electronic message was not validly stamped, the response message including a link that is configured to, upon user selection, initiate a process to have the stamp authority system generate and associate new non-display stamp information with a retransmission of the electronic message.

16. The method of claim 11 wherein handling the electronic message in the first manner comprises:

determining, from among multiple tiers of stamps, a tier of the valid stamp associated with the electronic message, wherein each of the multiple tiers of stamps results in the electronic message being handled by a receiving system in a different manner.

17. The method of claim 16 wherein the multiple tiers of stamps include:

a first tier of stamps that results in the electronic message being placed, by the receiving system, in a folder for stamped messages;

a second tier of stamps that results in at least one of the electronic message being placed, by the receiving system, in a higher priority folder that is different than the folder for stamped messages, a confirmation receipt for the electronic message being transmitted by the receiving system, and a copy of the electronic message being routed, by the receiving system, to an administrative assistant of the recipient of the electronic message; and

a third tier of stamps that results in at least one of the electronic message being forwarded, by the receiving system, to one or more additional devices of the recipient of the electronic message, the electronic message being forwarded, by the receiving system, to one or more additional messaging accounts of the recipient of the electronic message, and the electronic message being forwarded to a human operator in response to the electronic message being rejected.

The method of claim 17 wherein the second tier of stamps results in the electronic message being placed, by the receiving system, in a higher priority folder that is different than the folder for stamped messages, and the third tier of stamps results in the electronic message being forwarded, by the receiving system, to one or more additional devices of the recipient of the electronic message, further comprising:

in response to determining that the tier of the valid stamp associated with the electronic message is the first tier, placing, by the receiving system, the electronic message in the folder for stamped messages;

in response to determining that the tier of the valid stamp associated with the electronic message is the second tier, placing, by the receiving system, the electronic message in the higher priority folder that is different than the folder for stamped messages; and

in response to determining that the tier of the valid stamp associated with the electronic message is the third tier, forwarding, by the receiving system, the electronic message to one or more additional devices of the recipient of the electronic message.

The method of claim 17 wherein the second tier of stamps results in the electronic message being placed, by the receiving system, in a higher priority folder that is different than the folder for stamped messages, and the third tier of stamps results in the electronic message being forwarded, by the receiving system, to one or more additional messaging accounts of the recipient of the electronic message, further comprising:

in response to determining that the tier of the valid stamp associated with the electronic message is the first tier, placing, by the receiving system, the electronic message in the folder for stamped messages;

in response to determining that the tier of the valid stamp associated with the electronic message is the second tier, placing, by the receiving system, the electronic message in the higher priority folder that is different than the folder for stamped messages; and

in response to determining that the tier of the valid stamp associated with the electronic message is the third tier, forwarding, by the receiving system, the electronic message to one or more additional messaging accounts of the recipient of the electronic message.

20. The method of claim 11 wherein:

handling the electronic message in the first manner comprises visually distinguishing, in the user interface, the displayed electronic message from other displayed electronic messages that are not associated with a valid stamp.
