Abstract

The present invention describes a targeting system suitable for guiding a biocompatible device to a target area within the body (in vivo) and method of using the same. The system includes a targeting member that is attached to the biocompatible device and may optionally include a steering material. The system includes a passer element located at the distal end of a wand. The wand includes a trigger like member adjacent a hand grip. Actuation of the trigger like member will result in a pivotal movement of the passer element that positions the targeting member such that the connected biocompatible device is positionable relative to the target area.

Claims (8)

1. A targeting system suitable for facilitating navigation to a target area located in vivo, said system comprising: a targeting member having a first end and a second end, said second end constructed and arranged for attachment to a biocompatible device; and at least one anchoring member having a proximal end and a distal end, said distal end constructed and arranged to secure to a target area located in vivo; and a wand having a passer element at a distal end of said wand; said passer element including a cavity formed at a distal end of said passer element that is sized and configured to receive said targeting member, said wand further including an actuator operatively connected to said passer element; and an extender having a first open end and second open end and a cavity therebetween, the first open end of said extender being removably attached to said proximal end of said at least one anchoring member, said extender including a passageway, adjacent the first open end, between said cavity and an external surface of said extender, and, the second open end of said extender protruding a distance outside of a percutaneous exposure created in the outer skin of a patient; said targeting member is sized and shaped to enter the extender at the second open end and move within said cavity to a position adjacent the first open end of the extender and to move through said passageway such that at least a portion of said targeting member extends to a location external of said extender, whereby, the passer element of said wand interacts with said targeting member such that said connected biocompatible device is positionable relative to said target area; a removal tool that can be inserted at the second open end and through the cavity and to the first open end of said extender, whereby the targeting member can be captured by said removal tool and removed from the extender through the second end, wherein said targeting member is mounted in said cavity located at the distal end of said passer element; said wand including a hand holding grip and a trigger like component pivotally attached thereto, said hand holding grip member including a first elongated rod like member, and an additional elongated rod like member that is positioned adjacent said first elongated rod member and is pivotally connected to said trigger like component and is also pivotally connected to said passer element through a pivot at an opposite end, said passer element is also pivotally connected to said additional elongated rod, whereby pivotal motion of trigger like component relative to said hand grip causes relative axial displacement of said first rod like member with respect to said additional rod like member, and, said relative displacement will result in the pivotal movement of said passer element.

2. The targeting system of claim 1 , wherein said targeting system includes a plurality of anchoring members each capable of independently receiving said targeting member by actuation of said wand.

3. The targeting system of claim 2 , wherein said anchor member is a fastener for attaching to a bony structure and said biocompatible device is configured to connect a plurality of anchor members.

4. The targeting system of claim 1 , wherein said removal tool includes movable members to exert a gripping force on the targeting member.

5. The targeting system of claim 1 , wherein said targeting member includes a steering material influenced by a magnetic field.

6. The targeting system of claim 5 wherein said removal tool includes magnetic material mounted on a distal end of said tool.

7. The targeting system of claim 1 wherein said biocompatible device is an implant or surgical instrument.

8. The targeting system of claim 1 wherein said biocompatible device is formed from a material selected from the group consisting of rigid, semi-rigid, or flexible material.
