Light emitting diode illumination system
In various embodiments of the invention, a unique construction for Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) with at least one luminescent rod and extracting optical elements used to generate a variety of high brightness light sources with different emission spectra. In an embodiment of the invention, forced air cooling is used to cool the luminescent rod. In an embodiment of the invention, totally internal reflected light can be redirected outward and refocused. In another embodiment of the invention, light emitted by the luminescent rod is out-coupled for use in a variety of applications.
1. An illumination system, comprising:
a first light emitting diode (LED) light source, which emits a first light in a first selected color;
a luminescent rod light source, which includes
a second LED light source, which emits a second light in a second selected color, and
a luminescent rod, which can be excited along its length such that it generates luminescent light within the luminescent rod itself, and which is positioned to receive and absorb the second light, and wherein the luminescent rod then generates by luminescence and emits, at an outlet aperture, a third light in a third selected color; and
wherein one or more of the first, second and third lights are combined and used to provide illumination; and
wherein the luminescent rod includes the outlet aperture and wherein the third light generated by luminescence exits the luminescent rod at the outlet aperture; and
an optical element to increase the light emitted at the outlet aperture.
2. The illumination system of claim 1 , wherein the luminescent rod is cooled with forced air.
3. The illumination system of claim 1 , wherein the optical element couples the third light emitted from the luminescent rod at the outlet aperture to a system that uses one or both the first light and third light of the illumination system.
4. The illumination system of claim 1 , wherein the optical element refocuses the third light emitted from the luminescent rod onto the same optical axis as the first light.
5. The illumination system of claim 1 , wherein the first light is the same color as the second light.
6. The illumination system of claim 1 , wherein a plurality of LED light source modules are used as the LED light sources, to emit one or both of the first light and the second light.
7. The illumination system of claim 1 , wherein the system includes a plurality of luminescent rods arranged in series or in parallel, and wherein the second light passes through the plurality of luminescent rods.
8. The illumination system of claim 1 , wherein the luminescent rod comprises rare earth activated garnets.
9. The illumination system of claim 1 , wherein one or more of the lights are collected and combined to provide illumination.
10. A method of generating light, comprising the steps of:
using a first light emitting diode (LED) light source, which emits a first light in a first selected color;
using a luminescent rod light source, which includes
a second LED light source, which emits a second light in a second selected color, and
a luminescent rod, which can be excited along its length such that it generates luminescent light within the luminescent rod itself, and which is positioned to receive and absorb the second light, and wherein the luminescent rod then generates by luminescence and emits, at an outlet aperture, a third light in a third selected color; and
combining and using one or more of the first, second and third lights to provide illumination; and wherein the luminescent rod includes the outlet aperture and wherein the third light generated by luminescence exits the luminescent rod at the outlet aperture; and
an optical element to increase the light emitted at the outlet aperture.
11. The method of claim 10 , including using forced air to cool the luminescent rod.
12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the using steps cause the first light source to emit a first color that is the same as the second color emitted by the second light source.
13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the using steps use a plurality of LED light source modules as the LED light sources, to emit one or both of the first light and the second light.
14. The method of claim 10 , wherein the using steps use the one or more of the lights, collected and combined, to provide illumination.
15. An illumination system, comprising:
a first light emitting diode (LED) light source, which emits a first light in a first selected color;
a luminescent rod light source, which includes
a second LED light source, which emits a second light in a second selected color, and
a luminescent rod, which can be excited along its length such that it generates luminescent light within the luminescent rod itself, and which is positioned to receive and absorb the second light, and
wherein the luminescent rod then generates by luminescence and emits, at an outlet aperture, a third light in a third selected color; and
wherein one or more of the first, second and third lights are combined and used to provide illumination; and
wherein the third light generated by luminescence exits the luminescent rod at the outlet aperture; and an optical element to increase the light emitted at the outlet aperture.
16. The illumination system of claim 15 , wherein the luminescent rod is cooled with forced air.
17. The illumination system of claim 15 , wherein the optical element couples the third light emitted from the luminescent rod at the outlet aperture to a system that uses one or both the first light and third light of the illumination system.
18. The illumination system of claim 15 , wherein the optical element refocuses the third light emitted from the luminescent rod onto the same optical axis as the first light.
19. The illumination system of claim 15 , wherein the first light is the same color as the second light.
20. The illumination system of claim 15 , wherein a plurality of LED light source modules are used as the LED light sources, to emit one or both of the first light and the second light.
21. The illumination system of claim 15 , wherein the system includes a plurality of luminescent rods arranged in series or in parallel, and wherein the second light passes through the plurality of luminescent rods.
22. The illumination system of claim 15 , wherein the luminescent rod comprises rare earth activated garnets.
23. The illumination system of claim 15 , wherein one or more of the lights are collected and combined to provide illumination.
