Abstract

A system and method is provided by which players participating in a primary lottery drawing may elect to participate in a second, or derivative lottery drawing (a “meta-game”). In one embodiment, a meta-game is conducted by first registering a plurality of lottery entries to define a group. The group wins an award in the meta-game if the plurality of lottery entries of the group fail to win an award above a predetermined threshold in the primary lottery drawing.

Claims (29)

1. A system comprising:

a terminal comprising:

a first processor,

a first storage device in communication with the first processor, the first storage device storing instructions configured to direct the first processor to:

receive an identifier that identifies collectively a first set of numbers of a ticket and a second set of numbers of the ticket,

in which each of the first and second sets of numbers is for a single lottery drawing,

in which each of the first and second sets of numbers is initially determined, respectively, from a complete pool of lottery numbers corresponding to the single lottery drawing;

determine a set of winning numbers for the single lottery drawing;

determine a first primary payout for only the first set of numbers that is based on a number of matches between the first set of numbers and the set of winning numbers for the single lottery drawing;

determine a second primary payout for only the second set of numbers that is based on a number of matches between the second set of numbers and the set of winning numbers for the single lottery drawing;

determine a secondary payout for a combination of the full first set of numbers and the full second set of numbers that is based on a number of matches between (i) the combination of the full first set of numbers and the full second set of numbers and (ii) the set of winning numbers for the single lottery drawing;

determine a total payout for the ticket that is based on the first primary payout, the second primary payout and the secondary payout for the combination of the full first set of numbers and the full second set of numbers,

the secondary payout being different than a sum of the respective primary payouts; and

an output device in communication with the first processor, the output device being operative to output an indication of the total payout.

2. The system of claim 1 , in which receiving the identifier comprises:

receiving the ticket.

3. The system of claim 1 , in which the instructions stored by the first storage device of the terminal are further configured to direct the first processor to:

determine, based on the identifier, the first and second sets of numbers of the player.

4. The system of claim 1 , in which the instructions stored by the first storage device of the terminal are further configured to direct the first processor to:

receiving an indication of the respective primary payout for the first set of numbers.

5. The system of claim 1 , in which the instructions stored by the first storage device of the terminal are further configured to direct the first processor to:

receive an indication of the secondary payout.

6. The system of claim 1 , in which the instructions stored by the first storage device of the terminal are further configured to direct the first processor to:

receive an indication of the total payout.

7. The system of claim 1 , in which determining the total payout comprises:

calculating the total payout.

8. The system of claim 1 , in which determining the total payout comprises:

summing the respective primary payouts and the secondary payout.

9. The system of claim 1 , the total payout being different that a sum of the respective primary payouts.
