Abstract

Methods and devices are provided for anchoring suture to bone. In one exemplary embodiment, a cannulated suture anchor is provided and it includes a suture-engaging member formed therein and configured to receive a suture therearound such that trailing ends of the suture can extend through the suture anchor. The present invention also provides exemplary sutures and drivers that can be used with the various methods and devices disclosed herein, or with other methods and devices known in the art.

Claims (25)

1. A suture anchor, comprising:

an elongate body having proximal and distal ends with an inner lumen extending therethrough, and one or more threads formed on and extending around an external surface thereof for engaging bone; and

a rotatable member extending between opposed sidewalls of the inner lumen at a fixed longitudinal position with respect to the elongate body, the rotatable member being adapted to rotate relative to the elongate body;

wherein the one or more threads extend from the proximal end of the elongate body and terminate proximal to the rotatable member.

2. The suture anchor of claim 1 , wherein the rotatable member is disposed adjacent the distal end of the elongate body.

3. The suture anchor of claim 1 , wherein the rotatable member comprises a post extending between opposed walls of the inner lumen.

4. The suture anchor of claim 1 , wherein the rotatable member extends substantially perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the suture anchor.

5. The suture anchor of claim 1 , wherein the elongate body includes cut-outs formed in opposed sidewalls thereof and extending proximally from the distal end of the elongate body, the cut-outs being in communication with the inner lumen.

6. The suture anchor of claim 5 , wherein the rotatable member is positioned distal of a proximal end of the cut-outs.

7. The suture anchor of claim 5 , wherein the one or more threads terminate proximal to a proximal end of the cut-outs.

8. The suture anchor of claim 1 , wherein the rotatable member is positioned just proximal to a distal-most end of the elongated body such that the distal end of the elongated body includes a suture-seating groove formed therein and configured to seat at least one suture.

9. The suture anchor of claim 1 , further comprising a suture disposed around the rotatable member and having trailing ends extending through the suture anchor.

10. The suture anchor of claim 1 , wherein the rotatable member includes a generally cylindrical body having opposed sidewalls and a continuously curved outer wall extending between the sidewalls, the outer wall having a groove formed therein configured to seat one or more sutures.

11. The suture anchor of claim 1 , further comprising a lubricious coating on the rotatable member.

12. The suture anchor of claim 1 , wherein the rotatable member extends at a non-perpendicular angle relative to a longitudinal axis of the suture anchor.

13. The suture anchor of claim 1 , wherein the inner lumen has a first cross-sectional shape proximal to a proximal-most end of the rotatable member and a second, different cross-sectional shape distal to the proximal-most end of the rotatable member.

14. A suture anchor, comprising:

an elongate body having proximal and distal ends with an inner lumen extending therethrough, a cut-out formed in opposed sidewalls at the distal end of the elongate body and defining opposed distal arms, and at least one thread formed on and extending around an external surface thereof for engaging bone, interior walls of the elongate body that define the inner lumen having a first cross-sectional shape proximal to the proximal-most ends of the distal arms and having a second, different cross-sectional shape distal to the proximal-most ends of the distal arms; and

a rotatable member extending between the opposed distal arms defined by the cut-out, and adapted to rotate relative to the elongate body, wherein the one or more threads extend from the proximal end of the elongate body and terminate proximal to the rotatable member.

15. The suture anchor of claim 14 , wherein the cut-out is located just proximal to the rotatable member.

16. The suture anchor of claim 14 , wherein the rotatable member is positioned just proximal to a distal-most end of the elongated body such that the distal end of the elongated body includes a suture-seating groove formed therein and configured to seat at least one suture.

17. The suture anchor of claim 14 , wherein the rotatable member is generally cylindrical and includes a groove formed therein and configured to seat one or more sutures.

18. The suture anchor of claim 14 , wherein the at least one thread terminates proximal to a proximal end of the cut-out.

19. The suture anchor of claim 14 , further comprising a pin member extending through a bore extending through the rotatable member, the pin member extending into openings formed in the opposed distal arms.

20. The suture anchor of claim 19 , wherein the pin member is adapted to not move longitudinally relative to the elongate body when the rotatable member rotates relative to the elongate body.
