Abstract

A method, apparatus, and computer-readable medium for basis selection is described. A plurality of sub-bands of digital data is generated and a basis function for the digital data in one of the plurality of sub-bands is determined at a rate that provides a substantially peak signal-to-noise ratio for the digital data. The basis function is added to a codebook and the digital data is compressed using the codebook.

Claims (42)

1. A method comprising:

generating, by a computing device, a plurality of sub-bands of digital data;

determining, at a rate that provides a substantially peak signal-to-noise ratio for the digital data, by the computing device, a basis function for the digital data in one of the plurality of sub-bands;

adding, by the computing device, the basis function to a codebook; and

compressing, by the computing device, the digital data using the codebook.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the determining comprises selecting the basis function from a dictionary of basis functions.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the determining comprises determining the basis function by applying a mask to a dictionary of basis functions.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the generating comprises at least one of using a frequency of the digital data, applying a wavelet transform to the digital data, applying a discrete wavelet transform to the digital data, applying a Fourier transform to the digital data, applying a discrete cosine transform to the digital data, or filtering the digital data with a finite impulse response filter.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

repeating the determining and the adding for a fixed number of repetitions.

6. The method of step 1 , further comprising:

transmitting the compressed digital data.

7. The method of step 1 , further comprising:

storing the compressed digital data.

8. A tangible computer readable medium having stored thereon computer-executable instructions, execution of which by a computing device causes the computing device to perform operations comprising:

generating a plurality of sub-bands of digital data;

determining, at a rate that provides a substantially peak signal-to-noise ratio for the digital data, a basis function for the digital data in one of the plurality of sub-bands;

adding the basis function to a codebook; and

compressing the digital data using the codebook.

9. The tangible computer-readable medium of claim 8 , wherein the determining comprises selecting the basis function from a dictionary of basis functions.

10. The tangible computer-readable medium of claim 8 , wherein the determining comprises determining the basis function by applying a mask to a dictionary of basis functions.

11. The tangible computer-readable medium of claim 8 , wherein the generating comprises at least one of using a frequency of the digital data, applying a wavelet transform to the digital data, applying a discrete wavelet transform to the digital data, applying a Fourier transform to the digital data, applying a discrete cosine transform to the digital data, or filtering the digital data with a finite impulse response filter.

12. The tangible computer-readable medium of claim 8 , wherein the operations further comprise:

transmitting the compressed digital data.

13. The tangible computer-readable medium of claim 8 , wherein the operations further comprise:

storing the compressed digital data.

14. An apparatus comprising:

a processor; and

a memory storing instructions configured to cause the processor to:

generate a plurality of sub-bands of digital data;

determine, at a rate that provides a substantially peak signal-to-noise ratio for the digital data, a basis function for the digital data in one of the plurality of sub-bands;

add the basis function to a codebook; and

compress the digital data using the codebook.

15. The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the processor is configured to select the basis function from a dictionary of basis functions.

16. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the processor is configured to determine the basis function by applying a mask to a dictionary of basis functions.

17. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the processor is configured to generate the plurality of sub-bands by at least one of using a frequency of the digital data, applying a wavelet transform to the digital data, applying a discrete wavelet transform to the digital data, applying a Fourier transform to the digital data, applying a discrete cosine transform to the digital data, or filtering the digital data with a finite impulse response filter.

18. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

repeat the determining and the adding for a fixed number of repetitions.

19. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

transmit the compressed digital data.

20. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

store the compressed digital data.
