Abstract

A variable capacity vane includes a pump control ring which is moveable to alter the capacity of the pump and the pump can be operated at either of at least two selected equilibrium pressures. The pump ring is moved by at least first and second control chambers, the control chambers abutting the control ring such that pressurized fluid supplied to them acts on the pump control ring to move the pump control ring to reduce the volumetric capacity of the pump. When pressurized fluid is supplied to only one control chamber, the pump operates at a first equilibrium pressure and when pressurized fluid is also supplied to the second chamber, the pump operates at a second equilibrium pressure. Pressurized fluid can also be supplied only to the second control chamber to operate the pump at a third equilibrium pressure and/or additional control chambers can be provided if required.

Claims (20)

1. A method of pumping fluid at multiple equilibrium pressures, the method comprising:

providing pressurized fluid to a first control chamber;

urging a moveable control ring in a first direction with the pressurized fluid in the first control chamber to reduce the volumetric capacity of the pump;

providing pressurized fluid to a second control chamber;

urging the control ring in the first direction with the pressurized fluid in the second control chamber to reduce the volumetric capacity of the pump;

biasing the control ring in a second direction opposite the first direction; and

varying the supply of pressurized fluid to the second control chamber based on a pump speed to change the volumetric capacity of the pump.

2. The method of claim 1 further including achieving a first equilibrium condition at a first volumetric capacity when a first magnitude of pressure is provided to the second control chamber and achieving a second equilibrium condition at a second volumetric capacity when a second pressure magnitude is provided to the second control chamber.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein the supply of pressurized fluid to the second control chamber is removed to provide the first magnitude of pressure.

4. The method of claim 3 further including pressurizing the fluid with the pump.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein biasing the control ring includes engaging a spring with the control ring.

6. The method of claim 5 further including controlling a solenoid to selectively provide pressurized fluid to the second control chamber.

7. A method of pumping fluid at multiple equilibrium pressures, the method comprising:

rotating an input member of a pump to pump fluid from an inlet to an outlet;

providing pressurized fluid at a magnitude proportional to the pressure at the outlet to a first control chamber;

urging a control ring in a first direction with the pressurized fluid in the first control chamber to reduce the volumetric capacity of the pump;

biasing the control ring in a second direction opposite the first direction; and

providing pressurized fluid to a second control chamber and urging the control ring in the first direction based on a rotational speed of the pump input member.

8. The method of claim 7 further including achieving a first equilibrium condition at a first volumetric capacity when a first magnitude of pressure is provided to the second control chamber and achieving a second equilibrium condition at a second volumetric capacity when a second pressure magnitude is provided to the second control chamber.

9. The method of claim 8 further including controlling a solenoid to selectively provide pressurized fluid to the second control chamber.
