Abstract

A rotor blade for a wind turbine is disclosed. The rotor blade may generally include a body formed at least partially from a core material. The body may generally define a pressure side and a suction side extending between a leading edge and a trailing edge. The rotor blade may also include a plurality of shear members and a plurality of stiffening members. The shear members may generally extend between the pressure and suction sides of the body and may each include a first end and a second end. The stiffening members may be spaced apart around the pressure and suction sides of the body, with each stiffening member being disposed at the first end or the second end of one of the shear members. Additionally, the rotor blade may include a skin extending around an outer perimeter of the body.

Claims (39)

1. A rotor blade for a wind turbine, the rotor blade comprising:

a body formed at least partially from a core material, the body defining a pressure side and a suction side extending between a leading edge and a trailing edge;

a plurality of shear members extending between the pressure and suction sides, each of the plurality of shear members including a first end and a second end

a plurality of stiffening members spaced apart around the pressure and suction sides, each of the plurality of stiffening members being disposed at the first end or the second end of one of the plurality of shear members;

a skin extending around an outer perimeter of the body; and

a plurality of cross-members extending between at least two adjacent stiffening members of the plurality of stiffening members, each of the plurality of cross members being disposed adjacent to the skin.

2. The rotor blade of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of stiffening members extends spanwise along the body at a location adjacent to the skin.

3. The rotor blade of claim 1 , further comprising a first edge stiffening member disposed at or adjacent to the leading edge and a second edge stiffening member disposed at or adjacent to the trailing edge.

4. The rotor blade of claim 1 , further comprising at least one auxiliary stiffening member disposed between the first and second ends of each of the plurality of shear members.

5. The rotor blade of claim 1 , further comprising a transverse stiffening member extending within the body from generally adjacent the leading edge to generally adjacent the trailing edge.

6. The rotor blade of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of cross members extends diagonally between the at least two adjacent stiffening members.

7. The rotor blade of claim 1 , wherein the core material comprises a low density material.

8. The rotor blade of claim 1 , wherein the body is formed substantially from the core material.

9. A method for manufacturing a rotor blade for a wind turbine, the method comprising:

assembling a blade blank comprising a plurality of shear members spaced apart within a volume of core material;

shaping the blade blank to form a body having a pressure side and a suction side extending between a leading edge and a trailing edge, the plurality of shear members extending between the pressure and suction sides;

positioning a plurality of stiffening members around the pressure and suction sides so that at least two stiffening members of the plurality of stiffening members are aligned with each of the plurality of shear members;

positioning a plurality of cross members between adjacent stiffening members of the plurality of stiffening members; and

positioning a skin around an outer perimeter of the body.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein positioning a plurality of stiffening members around the pressure and suction sides so that at least two stiffening members of the plurality of stiffening members are aligned with each of the plurality of shear members comprises aligning the at least two stiffening members with each of the plurality of shear members after the blade blank is shaped to form the body.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein each of the plurality of shear members includes a first end disposed adjacent to the pressure side and a second end disposed adjacent to the suction side, wherein shaping the blade blank to form a body having a pressure side and a suction side extending between a leading edge and a trailing edge comprises shaping the blade blank to form a channel at the first and second ends of each of the plurality of shear members.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein aligning the at least two stiffening members with each of the plurality of shear members after the blade blank is shaped to form the body comprises positioning a stiffening member within each channel.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein positioning a plurality of stiffening members around the pressure and suction sides so that at least two stiffening members of the plurality of stiffening members are aligned with each of the plurality of shear member comprises aligning the at least two stiffening members with each of the plurality of shear members before the blade blank is shaped to form the body.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein assembling a blade blank comprising a plurality of shear members spaced apart within a volume of core material comprises assembling each of the plurality of shear members and the at least two stiffening members between a plurality of core material segments to form the blade blank.

15. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

positioning a first edge stiffening member at or adjacent to the leading edge; and,

positioning a second edge stiffening member at or adjacent to the trailing edge.

16. The method of claim 9 , wherein positioning a plurality of stiffening members around the pressure and suction sides so that at least two stiffening members of the plurality of stiffening members are aligned with each of the plurality of shear members comprises:

positioning a stiffening member at a first end and a second end of each of the plurality of shear members; and,

positioning an auxiliary stiffening member at a location between the first and second ends.

17. A rotor blade for a wind turbine, the rotor blade comprising:

a body formed at least partially from a core material, the body defining a pressure side and a suction side extending between a leading edge and a trailing edge;

a plurality of shear members extending between the pressure and suction sides, each of the plurality of shear members including a first end and a second end

a plurality of stiffening members spaced apart around the pressure and suction sides, each of the plurality of stiffening members being disposed at the first end or the second end of one of the plurality of shear members; and

a skin extending around an outer perimeter of the body,

wherein each of the plurality of shear members comprises a plurality of brace members extending between opposed stiffening members of the plurality of stiffening members.

18. The rotor blade of claim 17 , wherein each of the plurality of brace members extends diagonally between the opposed stiffening members.

19. The rotor blade of claim 17 , wherein each of the plurality of stiffening members extends spanwise along the body at a location adjacent to the skin.

20. The rotor blade of claim 17 , wherein the core material comprises a low density material.
