Abstract

This disclosure is directed to information management techniques that may be used during automated processing of biological growth media. In one embodiment, a method comprises reading one or more identification elements of a biological growth medium, identifying manufacturing information related to the biological growth medium based on the one or more identification elements of the biological growth medium, identifying sample information related to a sample being tested by the biological growth medium based on the one or more identification elements of the biological growth medium, generating one or more images of the biological growth medium, counting biological agents formed on the biological growth medium based on the one or more images, wherein counting the biological agents comprises generating a count value, and associating the manufacturing information, the sample information and the count value with the one or more identification elements of the biological growth medium.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the service information comprises information about the biological growth medium processing system.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the service information comprises one or more of:

counting rules applied by the biological growth medium processing system;

a temperature associated with incubation of the biological medium in an incubator of the biological growth medium processing system;

a difference between the count value and a human count;

information indicative of human intervention with the biological growth medium processing system during the processing of the biological growth medium; and

ambient conditions in proximity to a biological reader when images of the biological growth medium are generated.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more identification elements comprise a first identification element and a second identification element, the method further comprising:

generating the second identification element indicative of the sample information and the count value; and

labeling the biological growth medium with the second identification element.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

inoculating the biological growth medium in an inoculation unit of the biological growth medium processing system;

incubating the biological growth medium in an incubation unit of the biological growth medium processing system; and

generating the one or more images after inoculating and incubating the biological growth medium.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

recording times associated with inoculating, incubating and generating the one or more images; and

associating the times with the one or more identification elements to create a processing history associated with the biological growth medium.

10. A biological growth medium processing system comprising:

an identification element reader that reads one or more identification elements of a biological growth medium;

a computer that identifies manufacturing information related to the biological growth medium based on the one or more identification elements of the biological growth medium, and identifies sample information related to a sample being tested by the biological growth medium based on the one or more identification elements of the biological growth medium; and

a biological reader that generates one or more images of the biological growth medium; wherein the computer counts biological agents formed on the biological growth medium and generates a count value for the biological medium, and

wherein the computer associates the one or more identification elements of the biological growth medium with the manufacturing information, the sample information and the count value;

wherein the sample information includes:

a type of sample being tested on the biological growth medium;

information about a dilution agent used with the sample;

an origin associated with the sample being tested on the biological growth medium; and

an incubation time associated with the sample being tested on the biological growth medium.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein:

the identification element reader reads the one or more identification elements of the biological growth medium a second time; and

upon reading the one or more identification elements a second time, the computer identifies the manufacturing information, the sample information, and the count value based on the one or more identification elements.
