Abstract

Forward osmosis membranes include an active layer and a thin support layer. A bilayer substrate including a removable backing layer may allow forward osmosis membranes with reduced supporting layer thickness to be processed on existing manufacturing lines.

Claims (26)

1. A method of facilitating a forward osmosis separation process, comprising:

providing a forward osmosis membrane, wherein the step of providing the forward osmosis membrane comprises:

providing a support structure comprising a bilayer substrate including first and second separable layers, wherein the first layer has a thickness of less than 2 mils;

applying a material to the first layer of the bilayer substrate of the support structure to form a membrane support layer;

applying a barrier material comprising a polyamide to the membrane support layer via interfacial polymerization to form the forward osmosis membrane; and

removing the second layer of the bilayer substrate from the first layer of the bilayer substrate to form the forward osmosis membrane;

introducing a source of a draw solution to a first side of the membrane; and

introducing a source of a feed solution to a second side of the membrane.

2. A forward osmosis membrane comprising:

a support structure comprising a bilayer substrate including first and second separable layers, wherein the first layer has a thickness of less than 2 mils;

a membrane support layer disposed on the first layer of the bilayer substrate of the support structure, wherein the second layer of the bilayer substrate is removed from the first layer of the bilayer substrate to form a disrupted pore structure within the membrane support layer; and

a bather material layer comprising a polyamide disposed on the membrane support layer via interfacial polymerization.

3. A forward osmosis membrane, comprising:

a support structure having a Frazier air permeability of greater than 50 cfm/ft 2 -min and a thickness of less than 2 mils, wherein the support structure comprises a bilayer substrate including first and second separable layers and the second layer of the bilayer substrate is removed from the first layer of the bilayer substrate;

a membrane support layer disposed on the support structure; and

a bather material layer comprising a polyamide disposed on the membrane support layer via interfacial polymerization.

4. The membrane of claim 2 or 3 , wherein the membrane support layer comprises a material applied to the support structure and having a polymer loading of between about 5 and 20 g/m 2 .

5. The membrane of claim 2 or 3 , wherein the membrane support layer has an overall thickness of less than 50 microns.

6. The membrane of claim 2 or 3 , wherein the barrier material layer has an overall thickness of about 50 nm to 200 nm.

7. The membrane of claim 2 or 3 , wherein the support structure comprises a polymeric paper.

8. The membrane of claim 7 , wherein the support structure comprises at least one of polyethylene terephthalate or polypropylene.

9. The membrane of claim 2 or 3 , wherein at least one of the support structure, membrane support layer, or barrier material layer comprises an additive.

10. The membrane of claim 2 or 3 , wherein the combined weight of the support structure, membrane support layer, and barrier material layer is between about 20 and 40 g/m 2 .

11. The membrane of claim 2 or 3 , wherein the support structure is made in a wet-laid process.

12. The membrane of claim 2 or 3 , wherein the membrane support layer comprises a first side with a first plurality of pores and a second side with a second plurality of pores.

13. The membrane of claim 12 , wherein substantially all of the first plurality of pores have an average diameter of about 50 nm to about 500 nm and substantially all of the second plurality of pores have an average diameter of about 5 μm to about 50 μm.
