Abstract

A drop-in anchor system includes a drop-in anchor having a tubular sleeve with a first end and an expandable second end. The sleeve tapers in inner diameter from the first end to the second end at a sleeve taper angle. The drop-in anchor includes a plug insertable in the sleeve such that when the plug is driven into an installed position in the sleeve the second end expands. The plug tapers at a plug taper angle from a head end to a tip end and a difference between the sleeve taper angle and the plug taper angle is about one degree or more. The system includes an installation tool configured to form a hole in a workpiece into which the drop-in anchor is insertable and to drive the plug into the installed position in the sleeve.

Claims (14)

1. A drop-in anchor system comprising:

a drop-in anchor including:

a tubular sleeve having a first end and an expandable second end, the sleeve tapering in inner diameter from the first end to the second end at a sleeve taper angle; and

a plug insertable in the sleeve, the plug is configured and disposed to expand the expandable second end of the tubular sleeve when driven into an installed position, the plug tapering at a plug taper angle along substantially an entire length from a head end to a tip end, wherein a difference between the sleeve taper angle and the plug taper angle is about one degree or more, and wherein the sleeve taper angle is greater than the plug taper angle; and

an installation tool configured to form a hole in a workpiece into which the drop-in anchor is insertable and to drive the plug into the installed position in the sleeve.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the difference between the sleeve taper angle and the plug taper angle is about 1.5 degrees.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the installation tool comprises:

a drill bit including a first end configured as a drill for forming the hole in the workpiece; and

a tool sleeve securable to the drill bit including:

a tool pocket at least partially receptive of the drill bit therein; and

a tool tip configured to drive the plug into the installed position to secure the drop-in anchor in the workpiece.

4. The drop-in anchor system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a retainer formed of a durable moisture-resistant material insertable in the sleeve behind the plug, the retainer configured to be retained in the sleeve by the one or more threads and prevent inadvertent removal of the plug from the sleeve.

5. The drop-in anchor system of claim 4 , wherein the retainer includes one or more fingers extending outwardly from a center portion.
