Abstract

This invention relates to a system of communicating with a radio frequency identification (RFID) transponder microchip (IC) for the purpose of accessing pre-programmed data. Such system involves direct electrical contact between the system reading the data from the memory in the transponder IC and the IC itself via two mechanical contact points. This system provides an interface with a transponder IC in order to energize the IC. Once the presence of the transponder IC is detected, the host system can read or write to and process preprogrammed data stored in the IC.

Claims (26)

1. A system of communication with an RFID transponder IC comprising:

a primary host system emulating an over-the-air RFID interface;

a carrier incorporating two conductive contacts; and

an RFID transponder IC affixed to said conductive contacts;

wherein said RFID transponder IC is removably connectable to said primary host system through said conductive contacts on said carrier, and wherein when said RFID transponder IC is connected to said primary host system through said conductive contacts on said carrier, said RFID transponder IC communicates with said primary host system through said conductive contacts using an RFID protocol.

2. The system of claim 1 further comprising a monitor for monitoring a connection status of a connectable portion including said conductive contacts.

3. The system of claim 2 wherein said monitor is a circuit that monitors the voltage between said two conductive contacts.

4. The system of claim 2 wherein said monitor continuously polls the RFID transponder IC.

5. The system of claim 2 wherein said monitor comprises a voltage comparator.

6. The system of claim 1 in which said conductive contacts are made of carbon.

7. The system of claim 1 in which said conductive contacts are made of metal.

8. The system of claim 1 wherein said conductive contacts are made of conductive metal ink.

9. The system of claim 1 further comprising an interface cable that connects a connectable portion including said conductive contacts and said primary host system.

10. The system of claim 9 wherein said primary host system comprises a microprocessor, an interrogator IC, a power source, an antenna matching circuit, and a transponder matching circuit.

11. The system of claim 9 wherein said interface cable comprises a microprocessor.

12. The system of claim 9 wherein said interface cable comprises an antenna matching circuit.

13. The system of claim 9 wherein said interface cable comprises an interrogator IC.

14. The system of claim 9 wherein said interface cable comprises a transponder matching circuit.

15. The system of claim 1 wherein said communication between said primary host system and said RFID transponder IC occurs in the HF band.

16. The system of claim 1 wherein said communication between said primary host system and said RFID transponder IC occurs in the UHF band.

17. The system of claim 1 wherein communication between said primary host system and said RFID transponder IC occurs in the LF band.

18. The system of claim 1 wherein information relating to the carrier is stored as a data string in the RFID transponder IC, said data string including a lot code, a connectable portion serial number and a shelf life code.

19. The system of claim 1 wherein information relating to the carrier is stored as a data string in the RFID transponder IC, said data string including an OEM code identifying the distributor of a connectable portion including said conductive contacts.

20. The system of claim 1 wherein information relating to the carrier is stored as a data string in the RFID transponder IC, said data string including a usage counter indicating the number of uses remaining.

21. The system of claim 1 wherein said primary host system is an electrophysiological monitor containing at least one electrical connection to a patient.

22. The system of claim 21 wherein said carrier contains a ground guard conductor that is utilized by the primary host system to monitor current flow from said conductive contacts to said at least one electrical connection to a patient.
