Abstract

A component for a faucet includes a substrate including alumina and a first material provided over at least a portion of the substrate. The first material includes titanium and carbon. The component also includes a second material provided over the first material, the second material including carbon and having carbon sp3 bonding of at least 40 percent.

Claims (59)

1. A component for a faucet comprising:

a substrate comprising alumina;

a first material provided over at least a portion of the substrate, the first material comprising titanium and carbon; and

a second material provided over the first material, the second material comprising carbon and having carbon sp3 bonding of at least 40 percent.

2. The component of claim 1 , wherein the second material layer further comprises nitrogen.

3. The component of claim 2 , wherein the second material has a thickness of at least about 100 nanometers.

4. The component of claim 1 , further comprising a third material provided between the first material and the substrate, the third material comprising titanium.

5. The component of claim 1 , wherein the second material has a hardness of at least about 40 gigapascals.

6. The component of claim 1 , wherein the second material has an elastic modulus of at least about 400 gigapascals.

7. The component of claim 1 , wherein the second material has a coefficient of friction lower than that of diamond-like carbon.

8. The component of claim 1 , wherein the second material is amorphous.

9. The component of claim 1 , wherein the second material comprises graphitic inclusions.

10. The component of claim 1 , wherein the component is a disk valve for a faucet.

11. The component of claim 1 , wherein the component comprises an inlet for a fluid.

12. A component for a faucet comprising:

a ceramic substrate;

a first material on a surface of the substrate, the first material including titanium; and

a second material on the first layer of material, the second material including at least 40 percent tetrahedrally-bonded carbon.

13. The component of claim 12 , wherein the ceramic substrate comprises alumina.

14. The component of claim 12 , wherein the first material further comprises carbon.

15. The component of claim 14 , wherein the first material comprises titanium carbide.

16. The component of claim 12 , wherein the second material is provided at a thickness of at least about 300 nanometers.

17. The component of claim 12 , wherein the second material further comprises graphitic inclusions.

18. The component of claim 12 , wherein the second material has a coefficient of friction lower than that of diamond-like carbon.

19. The component of claim 18 , wherein the second material has a hardness higher than that of diamond-like carbon.

20. The component of claim 12 , wherein the second material has a hardness of at least about 40 gigapascals.

21. The component of claim 12 , wherein the second material has an elastic modulus of at least about 400 gigapascals.

22. The component of claim 12 , wherein the component is a disk valve for a faucet.

23. The component of claim 12 , wherein the component is a moveable disk valve and is configured to engage a stationary disk valve, wherein the stationary disk valve also comprises a ceramic substrate, a first material comprising titanium provided on the ceramic substrate, and a second material including at least 40 percent tetrahedrally-bonded carbon provided on the first material.

24. A component for a faucet comprising:

an alumina substrate;

a material comprising carbon provided over at least a portion of the substrate, the material comprising carbon having at least 40 percent tetrahedrally-bonded carbon; and

a material comprising titanium provided between the material comprising carbon and the substrate.

25. The component of claim 24 , wherein the alumina is sintered alumina.

26. The component of claim 24 , wherein the material comprising titanium further comprises carbon.

27. The component of claim 24 , wherein the material comprising carbon has a coefficient of friction lower than that of diamond-like carbon and a hardness higher than that of diamond-like carbon.

28. The component of claim 24 , wherein the material comprising carbon has a hardness of at least about 40 gigapascals and an elastic modulus of at least about 400 gigapascals.

29. The component of claim 24 , wherein the component is a disk valve for a faucet.

30. The component of claim 24 , wherein the component is a moveable disk valve and is configured to engage a stationary disk valve, wherein the stationary disk valve also comprises a ceramic substrate, a first material comprising titanium provided on the ceramic substrate, and a second material including at least 40 percent tetrahedrally-bonded carbon provided on the first material.

31. A component for a fluid control valve comprising:

a valve disk comprising a substrate comprising alumina, a titanium carbide material provided on a surface of the substrate, and a carbon layer on the titanium carbide material, the carbon layer comprising at least 40 percent tetrahedrally-bonded carbon.

32. The component of claim 31 , wherein the alumina is a sintered alumina.

33. The component of claim 31 , wherein the carbon layer has a thickness of at least about 100 nanometers.

34. The component of claim 31 , wherein the carbon layer has a coefficient of friction lower than that of diamond-like carbon.

35. The component of claim 31 , wherein the carbon layer further comprises a nitrogen dopant.

36. The component of claim 31 , wherein the carbon layer has a hardness of at least 40 gigapascals.

37. The component of claim 31 , wherein the carbon layer has an elastic modulus of at least 400 gigapascals.

38. The component of claim 31 , wherein the carbon layer has a higher hardness than the substrate.

39. The component of claim 31 , wherein the carbon layer has a higher hardness than diamond-like carbon.

40. The component of claim 31 , wherein the valve disk is configured to engage another valve disk to provide a fluid-tight seal.

41. A fluid control valve comprising:

a first disk comprising alumina in contact with a second disk, a surface of the first disk configured to slide against a surface of the second disk;

a coating provided on the surface of the first disk, the coating comprising a first layer of material comprising titanium and a second layer of material provided over the first layer of material, the second layer of material being amorphous and comprising at least 40 percent tetrahedrally-bonded carbon.

42. The fluid control valve of claim 41 , wherein the second material further comprises nitrogen.

43. The fluid control valve of claim 41 , wherein the coating has a thickness greater than 100 nanometers.

44. The fluid control valve of claim 41 , wherein the second material has a hardness of at least about 40 gigapascals.

45. The fluid control valve of claim 41 , wherein the second material has an elastic modulus of at least about 400 gigapascals.

46. The fluid control valve of claim 41 , wherein at least one of the first disk and the second disk includes an inlet for fluid.

47. The fluid control valve of claim 41 , wherein the first disk includes a first inlet for hot water and a second inlet for cold water.
