Abstract

A therapeutic method for treating a neurological disease by evaluating and correcting an abnormal neuraxial angle that cause abnormal biomechanically induced neuraxial stress and strain.

Claims (34)

1. A method for treating a neurological disorder comprising the steps of:

a) determining a neuraxial angle;

b) determining a neuraxial stress based on said neuraxial angle;

c) determining whether said neurological disorder is attributed in part to said neuraxial stress; and

d) surgically treating said neurological disorder by reducing the neuraxial stress, and wherein step (d) is performed when the neuraxial angle or a clivo-axial angle is less than about 135°.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein step (a) comprises:

e) imaging an occipitocervical junction; and

f) measuring an anatomical component of the occipitocervical junction selected from the group consisting of: neuraxial angle, clivo-axial angle, medulla length, and upper spinal cord length.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the neuraxial angle of step (a) is calculated by determining a clivo-axial angle.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein step (a) comprises:

g) imaging an occipitocervical junction; and

h) measuring an increase in neuraxial angulation during flexion of a neck in comparison to a normal position assumed by a brainstem relative to a spinal cord.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein step (a) comprises:

i) imaging an occipitocervical junction; and

j) analyzing a relationship between an inside curvature of a brainstem and an outer curvature of the brainstem.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein step (a) comprises:

k) imaging an occipitocervical junction; and

l) flexing a neck and measuring a thickness of a neuraxis at a region of flexion and measuring a radius subtended by an arc of rotation of the neuraxis in flexion.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein step (b) comprises determining conductivity of a neuraxis.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein step (c) comprises determining an aggregation of von Mises stress on composite nerve fibers.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the steps (a), (b), and (c) are performed using an imaging computational device.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the imaging computational device further determines an angle of correction necessary to reduce a neuraxial deformation.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein step (d) comprises correcting the neuraxial angle by surgically stabilizing, fixing and/or fusing a craniospinal junction.

The method of claim 1 , wherein said neurological disorder is selected from the group consisting of: cortical motor function disorders, cortical sensory perception disorders, lower cranial nerve dysfunctions, bowel function disorders, abnormal urinary functioning, psychological problems, respiratory dysfunctions, sleep-disordered breathing, congenital diseases, developmental disorders, anatomic conditions, acquired bone-softening conditions, metabolic bone disorders, connective tissue disorders, renal syndromes, metabolic syndromes, and endocrine syndromes.

13. A method for treating a neurological disorder comprising the steps of:

a) determining a neuraxial angle;

b) determining a neuraxial stress based on said neuraxial angle;

c) determining whether said neurological disorder is attributed in part to said neuraxial stress; and

d) surgically treating said neurological disorder by reducing the neuraxial stress, and wherein step (d) comprises correcting a clivo-axial angle to about 150° to about 170°.

14. A method for treating a neurological disorder comprising the steps of:

a) determining a neuraxial angle;

b) determining a neuraxial stress based on said neuraxial angle;

c) determining whether said neurological disorder is attributed in part to said neuraxial stress; and

d) surgically treating said neurological disorder by reducing the neuraxial stress, and wherein said neurological disorder underlies a phenotypical feature in a subgroup of patients diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.
