Abstract

An electrode array attached to neural tissue, such as the retina, necessarily has graded pressure exerted on the tissue, with higher pressure near the attachment point. Greater pressure improves contact between the electrodes and neural tissue while too much pressure may damage neural tissue. Hence it is advantageous to obtain equal pressure across the array field. In the present invention a central attachment point in the electrode field applies the most even pressure. Further, multiple and selective attachment points may be additionally provided on an electrode array allowing a surgeon to select the attachment points providing the best electrode tissue contact.

Claims (29)

1. An array for neural stimulation comprising:

A pliable body, suitable for implantation within a body;

a plurality of electrodes supported by said pliable body suitable to stimulate neural tissue forming an electrode field;

an attachment point, adapted for attachment to tissue, within said electrode field.

2. The array for neural stimulation according to claim 1 , further comprising a backbone structure extending from said attachment point.

3. The array for neural stimulation according to claim 1 wherein said attachment point is a void defined by said pliable body.

4. The array for neural stimulation according to claim 1 , wherein said pliable body includes a strain relief portion separating said attachment point from said pliable body.

5. The array for neural stimulation according to claim 4 , wherein said strain relief portion is a polymer softer than said pliable body.

6. The array for neural stimulation according to claim 1 , wherein said pliable body is curved to approximate the curvature of a retina.

7. The array for neural stimulation according to claim 2 , wherein the backbone structure is molded polymer.

8. The array for neural stimulation according to claim 1 , further comprising at least one secondary attachment point is in a heel portion proximate to a supply cable.

9. The array for neural stimulation according to claim 1 , further comprising at least one secondary attachment point in a toe portion opposite across said electrode field from a supply cable.

10. The array for neural stimulation according to claim 1 , further comprising a handle bonded to pliable body.

11. The array for neural stimulation according to claim 2 , further comprising a handle bonded to said backbone structure.

12. An array for neural stimulation comprising:

a polymer base layer;

metal traces deposited on said polymer base layer, including electrodes suitable to stimulate neural tissue forming an electrode field;

a polymer top layer deposited on said polymer base layer and said metal traces;

a partial or entire coating of the base and top layer by a soft polymer forming a pliable body; and

an attachment point within said electrode field, suitable for attachment to tissue;

wherein the array is suitable for implantation within a body.

13. The array for neural stimulation according to claim 12 , further comprising a backbone structure extending from said attachment point.

14. The array for neural stimulation according to claim 12 , wherein said attachment point is a void defined by said pliable body.

15. The array for neural stimulation according to claim 12 , wherein said pliable body includes a strain relief portion separating said attachment point from said pliable body.

16. The array for neural stimulation according to claim 15 , wherein said strain relief portion is a polymer softer than said pliable body.

17. The array for neural stimulation according to claim 12 , wherein said pliable body is curved to approximate the curvature of a retina.

18. The array for neural stimulation according to claim 13 , wherein the backbone structure is molded polymer.

19. The array for neural stimulation according to claim 12 , further comprising a secondary attachment point is in a heel portion proximate to a supply cable.

20. The array for neural stimulation according to claim 12 , further comprising a handle bonded to said pliable body.
