Abstract

Calibration and accuracy check systems for a chemical sniffer, such as a breath alcohol tester, which utilize the dispensing of droplets with determinable concentration of alcohol and/or other liquids in a determinable number either directly to a reaction chamber, or into a carrier gas which can be sampled. The systems generally provide for accurate sample concentration being provided to the breath tester while also providing for a simplified system which can be easier to move, and require less operational complexity, than prior wet or dry calibrating systems.

Claims (45)

1. A combination rehydrating system and breath tester comprising:

a breath tester, said breath tester comprising:

a gas reaction chamber;

a manifold for accepting a human breath;

a sampling inlet, said sampling inlet connecting between said gas reaction chamber and said manifold; and

a sampling piston, operation of said sampling piston forcing a sample of material from said manifold, through said sampling inlet, and into said gas reaction chamber;

a rehydrating system, said calibration system comprising:

a storage reservoir containing a liquid;

a dispensing head for dispensing said liquid directly to said gas reaction chamber

wherein said dispensing head dispenses said liquid to said gas reaction chamber without said sampling piston operating.

2. The combination of claim 1 wherein said number of droplets are dispensed into a carrier gas which combination is then supplied to said gas reaction chamber.

3. The combination of claim 1 wherein said liquid comprises water.

4. A combination calibration system and breath tester comprising:

a breath tester, said breath tester comprising:

a gas reaction chamber;

a manifold for accepting a human breath;

a sampling inlet, said sampling inlet connecting between said gas reaction chamber and said manifold; and

a sampling piston, operation of said sampling piston forcing a sample of material from said manifold, through said sampling inlet, and into said gas reaction chamber;

a calibration system, said calibration system comprising:

a storage reservoir containing a mixture of liquid alcohol and liquid water;

a dispensing head for dispensing liquid droplets of said mixture of known size from said storage reservoir; and

a monitoring system for determining the number of droplets dispensed from said dispensing head;

wherein said dispensing head dispenses a determinable number of droplets into a known volume of carrier gas;

wherein said carrier gas passes into said manifold;

wherein said sampling piston operates to send a sample of said carrier gas with said droplets therein to said gas reaction chamber; and

wherein said breath tester is calibrated based on the resulting concentration of alcohol in said number of droplets dispensed.

5. The combination of claim 4 wherein said alcohol comprises ethanol.

6. The combination of claim 4 wherein said alcohol comprises methanol.

7. A combination calibration system and chemical sniffer comprising:

a chemical sniffer, said chemical sniffer comprising:

a reaction chamber;

a manifold for accepting a gas sample;

a sampling inlet, said sampling inlet connecting between said reaction chamber and said manifold; and

a sampling piston, operation of said sampling piston forcing a portion of said gas sample in said manifold through said sampling inlet and into said reaction chamber;

a calibration system, said calibration system comprising:

a storage reservoir containing alcohol;

a dispensing head for dispensing droplets of known size from said storage reservoir; and

a monitoring system for determining the number of droplets dispensed from said dispensing head;

wherein said dispensing head dispenses a determinable number of droplets to said reaction chamber without said sampling piston operating and said chemical sniffer is calibrated based on the resulting concentration of alcohol in said number of droplets dispensed.

8. The combination of claim 7 wherein said number of droplets are dispensed into a carrier gas which combination is then supplied to said reaction chamber.

9. The combination of claim 7 wherein said number of droplets changes between successive tests.

10. The combination of claim 7 wherein said number of droplets changes according to a pattern over time.

11. The combination of claim 7 wherein said storage reservoir also includes water.

12. The combination of claim 7 wherein said alcohol comprises ethanol.

13. The combination of claim 7 wherein said alcohol comprises methanol.
