Abstract

Stents and methods of using stents are provided. Stents of the invention provide external support structure for a blood vessel segment disposed within, wherein the stents are capable of resilient radial expansion in a manner mimicking the compliance properties of an artery. The stent may be formed of a knitted or braided mesh formed so as to provide the needed compliance properties. A venous graft with the stent and a vein segment disposed within is provided, wherein graft is capable of mimicking the compliance properties of an artery. Methods of selecting stents for downsizing and methods of using the stents of the invention in downsizing and smoothening are provided. Methods of replacing a section of an artery with a venous graft including a stent of the invention are provided. Methods of reducing intimal hyperplasia in implanted vein segment in a venous graft using stents of the invention are provided.

Claims (9)

1. A vessel graft apparatus, comprising:

a replacement vessel for implantation into a human patient in a non-intralumenal setting, said replacement vessel having a maximum outer diameter and a minimum outer diameter when inflated to physiological pressure; and

a generally tubular support mounted at an ablumenal surface of said replacement vessel, said tubular support defining a lumenal wall having an inner diameter appropriate to diametrically downsize said inflated replacement vessel.

2. A vessel graft apparatus as in claim 1 wherein said inner diameter of said lumenal wall is appropriate to diametrically downsize said inflated replacement vessel by between 1-40%.

3. A vessel graft apparatus as in claim 1 wherein said inner diameter of said lumenal wall is smaller than said minimum outer diameter of said inflated replacement vessel.

4. A vessel graft apparatus, comprising:

a replacement vessel having a maximum outer diameter and a minimum outer diameter when inflated to physiological pressure; and

a generally tubular support mounted at an ablumenal surface of said replacement vessel, said tubular support being adapted to regulate said vessel diameter to diametrically downsize said inflated replacement vessel.

5. A vessel graft apparatus as in claim 4 wherein said tubular support is adapted to diametrically downsize said inflated replacement vessel by between 1-40% of said maximum outer diameter.
