Abstract

A guide assembly includes a spinal screw assembly having a bone screw and a spinal rod holder; and a spinal rod guide having first and second elongated arc portions defining a pair of longitudinal slots extending along the first and second arc portions, each of the first and second arc portions further defining at least one recess extending transversely from each of the longitudinal slots, the at least one recess configured to receive at least a portion of a reduction tool to enable reduction of a spinal rod received within the spinal rod holder.

Claims (35)

1. A spinal rod installation kit comprising:

a guide assembly comprising a bone screw assembly and a pair of arcuate flanges extending from the bone screw assembly, the arcuate flanges defining at least one longitudinal slot therebetween extending along a longitudinal axis of the guide assembly;

a spinal rod configured to be guided toward a fully seated position by the arcuate flanges;

a spacer having a first end and a second end, the second end configured to engage the spinal rod; and

a reducer configured to engage the first end of the spacer and having an inner member moveably coupled to an outer member;

wherein rotation of the outer member relative to the inner member causes a longitudinal movement of the bone screw assembly relative to the spinal rod;

wherein the inner member of the reducer includes at least one elongated extension, the extension configured to be received within the spacer and engage a corresponding recess extending laterally from the at least one longitudinal slot;

wherein the at least one extension and the pair of arcuate flanges have generally the same curvature about the longitudinal axis and are received within a common annular space within the spacer.

2. The kit of claim 1 , wherein the outer member of the reducer comprises a knob and a sleeve, wherein rotation of the knob about the inner member causes the inner member to move longitudinally relative to the sleeve.

3. The kit of claim 2 , wherein the sleeve is configured to engage the spacer such that the spacer and the sleeve are rotationally fixed relative to each other.

4. The kit of claim 1 , wherein the at least one extension comprises a pair of extensions and the recess comprises a pair of recesses, each recess configured to receive one of the extensions.

5. The kit of claim 1 , wherein each of the arcuate flanges is welded to the bone screw assembly and configured to break away from the bone screw assembly upon application of a torque to the flanges about the longitudinal axis of the flanges.

6. The kit of claim 5 , wherein each of the arcuate flanges is laser-welded to the bone screw assembly at a plurality of different locations.

7. A spinal rod installation kit comprising:

a guide assembly, the guide assembly comprising:

a spinal screw assembly comprising a bone screw and a spinal rod holder; and

a spinal rod guide comprising first and second elongated arc portions defining a pair of longitudinal slots extending along the first and second arc portions, each of the first and second arc portions further defining at least one recess extending transversely from each of the longitudinal slots;

a spacer; and

a reduction tool comprising at least one extension configured to engage the spacer and the recess in the spinal rod guide such that manipulation of the reduction tool results in movement of the spinal screw assembly relative to a spinal rod received within the spinal rod holder;

wherein the at least one extension and the first and second elongated arc portions have substantially the same curvature and are received within a common annular space within the spacer.

The kit of claim 7 , wherein the first and second arc portions are welded to the spinal screw assembly and configured to break away from the spinal screw assembly upon a predetermined amount of torque being applied to the first and second arc portions about a longitudinal axis defined by the first and second arc portions.

9. The kit of claim 7 , wherein the at least one recess is further configured to receive a portion of a removal tool, the removal tool rotatable such that rotation of the removal tool results in torque being applied to the first and second elongated arc portions via the recess.

10. The kit of claim 7 , wherein the spinal screw is configured to be secured to a vertebral body, and wherein the first and second elongated arc portions are configured to break away from the spinal screw after the spinal screw is secured to the vertebral body.

The kit of claim 7 , wherein the reduction tool comprises a first member configured to engage a spinal rod received in the spinal rod holder and a second member comprising the at least one extension, wherein movement of the second member relative to the first member causes a corresponding movement of the spinal screw assembly relative to the spinal rod.

12. The kit of claim 11 , wherein the first member comprises a sleeve and a knob, wherein rotation of the knob causes translational movement of the first member relative to the sleeve.

The kit of claim 7 , wherein for each of the first and second arc portions, the at least one recess comprises a first recess and a second recess spaced apart from the first recess, the first recess configured to receive the reduction tool to enable a user to reduce a spinal rod received within the spinal rod holder, the first recess and second recesses configured to receive a removal tool to enable a user to break away the first and second arc portions from the spinal rod holder.

14. The kit of claim 7 , wherein the spinal rod holder comprises a tulip-shaped body.

15. A spinal rod installation kit comprising:

a guide assembly, the guide assembly comprising:

a spinal screw assembly comprising a bone screw and a spinal rod holder; and

a spinal rod guide comprising first and second elongated arc portions defining first and second longitudinal slots extending along the first and second arc portions, each of the first and second arc portions further defining a recess extending transversely from each of the first and second longitudinal slots;

a spacer; and

a reduction tool comprising first and second elongated extensions configured to extend along the longitudinal axis of the first and second arc portions and be received in the first and second longitudinal slots, each of the first and second extensions comprising a tab extending laterally therefrom;

wherein the first and second extensions are configured to be received within the first and second longitudinal slots such that the tabs on the first and second extensions are received in the recesses extending from the first and second longitudinal slots; and

wherein the first and second extensions and the first and second elongated arc portions are configured to be received within a common annular space within the spacer.
