Abstract

The invention provides a non-invasive system and method for treatment of the heart. In a first aspect, a method for treatment of an anatomical site related to arrhythmogenesis of a heart of a patient comprises creating a target shape encompassing the anatomical site, directing particle beam radiation or x-ray radiation from outside the patient toward the target shape wherein one or more doses of radiation ablates the target shape and disregarding at least one orientation of cardiac motion while creating the target shape or directing the particle beam or both.

Claims (33)

1. A method for treatment of an anatomical site of a patient, the anatomical site having a cyclical motion, the cyclical motion comprising at least one of a cardiac motion and a respiratory motion of the patient, the method comprising:

receiving image data of the anatomical site of the patient, the image data comprising cyclical motion information of the anatomical site;

creating a three-dimensional target shape based on the received image data, the target shape at least partially encompasses the anatomical site during a portion of the cyclical motion of the anatomical site;

directing radiation from outside the patient toward the target shape so as to treat the target shape; and

disregarding at least one orientation of the anatomical site motion while creating the target shape or directing radiation toward the target shape or both.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining anatomical site motion in three dimensions from the image data and wherein the anatomical site motion is selectively disregarded by not compensating for the determined anatomical site motion of less than 2 mm.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the anatomical site motion is disregarded by not compensating for anatomical site motion in the direction along which the motion is the least.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the anatomical site motion is disregarded by not compensating for anatomical site motion for at least two orientations of the anatomical site motion.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the anatomical site motion is disregarded by not compensating for anatomical site motion in three orientations of the anatomical site motion.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the radiation is directed from outside the patient toward the target shape with accuracy tighter than 2 mm.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein a range of the cyclical motion within the target is less than 2 mm.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the anatomical site of the patient comprises a portion of a heart of the patient.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the target shape is treated to create a lesion on the heart.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the created lesion is transmural.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the anatomical site of the patient comprises a tumor.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the cyclical motion comprises cardiac motion of the patient.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising compensating for a respiratory motion while creating the target shape or directing radiation from outside the patient toward the target shape or both.

14. The method of claim 1 , further comprising only compensating for anatomical site motion greater than 2 mm.

15. A system for treatment of an anatomical site of a patient, the anatomical site having a cyclical motion, the cyclical motion comprising at least one of a cardiac motion and a respiratory motion of the patient, the system comprising:

a first apparatus configured to acquire image data of the anatomical site of the patient, the received image data comprising cyclical motion information of the anatomical site;

a second apparatus coupled with the first apparatus, the second apparatus configured to create a three-dimensional target shape based on received image data, the target shape at least partially encompasses the anatomical site during a portion of the cyclical motion of the anatomical site;

a radiation delivery device configured to direct one or more doses of radiation from outside the patient toward the target shape to ablate the target shape; and

wherein the second apparatus is configured to disregard at least one orientation of the anatomical site motion while creating the target shape or directing radiation toward the target shape or both.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the second apparatus is configured to determine the anatomical site motion in three dimensions and to disregard the anatomical site motion by not compensating for anatomical site motion of less than 2 mm in at least one orientation.

17. The system of claim 15 , wherein the anatomical site motion is disregarded by not compensating for anatomical site motion in the direction along which the motion is the least.

18. The system of claim 15 , wherein the anatomical site motion is disregarded by not compensating for anatomical site motion for at least two orientations of the anatomical site motion.

19. The system of claim 15 , wherein the anatomical site motion is disregarded by not compensating for anatomical site motion in three orientations of the anatomical site motion.

20. The system of claim 15 , wherein the radiation is directed from outside the patient toward the target shape with accuracy tighter than 2 mm.

21. The system of claim 15 , wherein the anatomical site of the patient comprises a portion of a heart of the patient.

22. The system of claim 15 , wherein the anatomical site of the patient comprises a tumor.

23. The system of claim 15 , wherein the cyclical motion comprises cardiac motion of the patient.

24. The system of claim 23 , the second apparatus or the radiation delivery device is configured to compensate for a respiratory motion while creating the target shape or directing radiation from outside the patient toward the target shape or both.

25. The system of claim 15 , wherein the second apparatus or the radiation delivery device is configured to compensate for anatomical site motion greater than 2 mm.
