Compositions for the treatment of gastrointestinal inflammation
Provided herein are methods for treating, preventing or alleviating the symptoms of and inflammation associated with inflammatory diseases and conditions of the gastrointestinal tract, for example, those involving the esophagus. Also provided herein are pharmaceutical compositions useful for the methods of the present invention.
1. A method of treating or alleviating esophageal inflammation or symptoms of esophageal inflammation in an individual comprising orally administering to said individual a stable oral pharmaceutical composition comprising a topically active corticosteroid, a liquid vehicle and a mucoadhesive agent that increases the interaction of the composition with an esophageal surface, wherein the composition is chemically and physically stable, wherein the composition remains substantially uniform for at least 1 day; and wherein the individual has been diagnosed with Barrett's Esophagus, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), nonerosive reflux disease (NERD), or erosive esophagitis.
