Abstract

A method, system, and computer program product comprising creating files on a de-duplication device corresponding to each of one or more storage mediums, marking data corresponding to a snapshot of the information stored on the one or more storage mediums and pushing the data corresponding to the snapshot to the de-duplication device.

Claims (60)

1. A system for data backup or archiving, the system comprising:

a data protection appliance (DPA)

one or more storage mediums;

a de-duplication device; and

computer-executable logic operating in memory, wherein the computer-executable program logic is configured for execution of:

creating files on a de-duplication device; each of the files corresponding to each of the one or more storage mediums;

pushing data corresponding to a snapshot of the information on the one or more storage mediums to the de-duplication device and creating a snapshot of the pushed data at the de-duplication.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the computer-executable logic is further configured for execution of:

creating a second snapshot;

determining changes between the snapshot and the second snapshot;

sending the changes to the de-duplication device; and

creating a second snapshot of the data pushed at the de-duplication device.

3. The system of claim 2 wherein the determining the changes comprises:

tracking Input/Output (I/O) between the first snapshot and the second snapshot at the DPA.

4. The system of claim 2 wherein the determining the changes comprises:

using one or more storage Application Program Interfaces (APIs) to determine the changes between the first snapshot and the second snapshot.

5. The system of claim 2 wherein the computer-executable logic is further configured for execution of:

creating an application consistent snapshot;

ensuring all the data of the snapshot pushed to the de-duplication device is consistent.

6. The system of claim 2 wherein creation of the snapshot comprises taking a snapshot of the data at the one or more storage mediums.

7. A computer implemented method for data replication, the method comprising:

creating files on a de-duplication device; each of the files corresponding to each of one or more storage mediums; wherein the one or more storage mediums stores data; wherein the one or more storage mediums are mapped to one or more data storage arrays;

sending the data corresponding to a snapshot of the information on the one or more storage mediums to the de-duplication device; and

creating a snapshot of the data at the de-duplication device.

8. The computer implemented method of claim 7 wherein the method further comprising:

creating a second snapshot;

determining changes between the snapshot and the second snapshot; and

sending the changes to the de-duplication device.

9. The computer implemented method of claim 8 wherein the method further comprising:

tracking Input/Output (I/O) between the first snapshot and the second snapshot at the DPA.

10. The computer implemented method of claim 8 wherein determining the changes comprises:

using one or more storage Application Program Interfaces (APIs) to determine the changes between the first snapshot and the second snapshot.

11. The computer implemented method of claim 8 wherein the method further comprising:

creating an application consistent snapshot;

ensuring all the data of the snapshot pushed to the de-duplication device is consistent.

12. The computer implemented method of claim 8 wherein creation of the snapshot comprises taking a snapshot of the data at the one or more storage mediums.

13. A computer program product for use in replication comprising:

a non-transitory computer readable medium encoded with computer executable program code for replication of data, the code configured to enable the execution of:

creating files on a de-duplication device; each of the files corresponding to each of one or more storage mediums;

pushing the data corresponding to a snapshot of the information on the one or more storage mediums to the de-duplication device and creating a second snapshot of the pushed data at the de-duplication device.

14. The program product of claim 13 wherein the executable program code is further configured for execution of:

creating a third snapshot;

determining changes between the snapshot and the third snapshot; and

sending the changes to the de-duplication device.

15. The program product of claim 14 wherein the executable program code is further configured for execution of:

tracking Input/Output (I/O) between the first snapshot and the second snapshot at a Data Protection Appliance (DPA).

16. The program product of claim 14 wherein determining the changes comprises:

using one or more Application Program Interfaces (APIs) of the one or more storage mediums to determine the changes between the snapshot and the second snapshot.

17. The program product of claim 14 wherein the executable program code is further configured for execution of:

creating an application consistent snapshot;

ensuring all the data of the snapshot pushed to the de-duplication device is consistent.

18. The program product of claim 14 wherein creation of the snapshot comprises taking a snapshot of the data at the one or more storage mediums.

19. The program product of claim 14 wherein the one or more storage mediums have a journal and a replica volume and there exist a splitter in the Input/Output (I/O) data path; wherein the splitter is enabled to create a copy of the IO in the data path.

20. The program product of claim 14 wherein differences between the snapshot and the second snapshot are determined by reading undo meta from a journal tracking the changes between the first and second snapshots.

21. The program product of claim 14 wherein the pushing of the first set data occurs without pausing distribution of changes to the one or more storage mediums while tracking changes occurring to the data; and wherein distribution is paused and the tracked changes are pushed to the de-duplication device.

22. The program product of claim 14 wherein the DPA replicates to a remote site and data is pushed to the de-duplication device at the remote site.

23. The program product of claim 14 wherein the DPA is selected from a group consisting of a virtual machine, a set of processes in the one or more storage mediums, and wherein the DPA is a part of the de-duplication device.

24. The program product of claim 19 wherein the executable program code is further configured for execution of:

pausing data distribution to a replica storage volume managed by the DPA; and

pushing data changes from replicated volumes to the files on the de-duplication device.
