Abstract

A wireless power receiving system for a mobile electronic device that includes a high-Q repeater resonator comprising at least an inductor and a capacitor and having a Q-factor Q1. The inductor of the repeater resonator is enclosed in a removable sleeve of the mobile electronic. The system also includes a high-Q device resonator comprising at least an inductor and a capacitor and having a Q-factor Q2. The device resonator is integrated in the mobile device and electrically connected to the mobile electronic device, and the square root of the product Q1 and Q2 is greater than 100.

Claims (40)

1. A wireless power receiving system for a mobile electronic device, comprising:

a high-Q repeater resonator comprising at least an inductor and having a capacitance, a Q-factor Q1 and a characteristic size, x1;

a high-Q device resonator comprising at least an inductor and having a capacitance, a Q-factor Q2 and a characteristic size, x2,

wherein at least the inductor of the repeater resonator is enclosed in a removable sleeve for the mobile device,

wherein the device resonator is integrated in the mobile device,

wherein the repeater resonator is configured to wirelessly receive power from a resonator and wirelessly transmit the power to the device resonator, and

wherein x1 is larger than x2 and the square root of the product Q1 and Q2 is greater than 100.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the inductor of the repeater resonator comprises wire.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the inductor of the repeater resonator comprises a printed circuit trace.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the inductor of the repeater resonator comprises magnetic material.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the repeater resonator is tunable.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the device resonator is tunable.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the mobile electronic device comprises a phone.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the mobile electronic device comprises wireless communications capabilities.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the device resonator is integrated with a battery pack.

10. A wireless power receiving system for a mobile electronic device, comprising;

a high-Q resonator comprising at least an inductor and having a capacitance, a Q-factor Q1>100 and a characteristic size, x1,

wherein the resonator is integrated into the housing of the mobile device and is not connected via a wired connection to any charging circuitry of the mobile device, and

wherein the resonator is configured to wirelessly capture power from an oscillating magnetic field and wirelessly deliver the power to the charging circuitry of the mobile device via a wireless power receiver coupled to the charging circuitry.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the mobile electronic device is a cell phone.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein the housing comprises the back portion of the mobile electronic device.

13. The system of claim 10 , wherein the housing comprises a battery door.

14. The system of claim 10 , wherein the wireless power receiver comprises a high-Q resonator, having a Q-factor Q2.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the square root of the product of Q1 and Q2 is greater than 100.

16. The system of claim 14 , wherein at least one of the high-Q resonators is tunable.

17. The system of claim 10 , wherein the mobile electronic device is configured to receive the power from a source resonator in a source resonator enclosure via the high-Q resonator when the source resonator enclosure and the mobile electronic device are not physically contacting each other, and wherein the source resonator is configured to generate the oscillating magnetic field.

18. A mobile electronic device comprising the wireless power receiving system of claim 1 .

19. A mobile electronic device comprising:

a housing;

charging circuitry inside the housing for powering the mobile electronic device;

a wireless power receiver directly coupled to the charging circuitry; and

a high-Q resonator integrated into the housing of the mobile electronic device, having a Q-factor Q1>100 and a characteristic size, x1, and comprising at least an inductor and has a capacitance,

wherein the high-Q resonator is not connected via a wired connection to the charging circuitry of the mobile device and is configured to wirelessly capture power from an oscillating magnetic field and wirelessly deliver the power to the charging circuitry via the wireless power receiver.

20. The device of claim 19 , wherein the mobile electronic device is a cell phone.

21. The device of claim 19 , wherein the housing comprises the back portion of the mobile electronic device.

22. The device of claim 19 , wherein the housing comprises a battery door.

23. The device of claim 19 , wherein the wireless power receiver comprises a high-Q resonator, having a Q-factor Q2.

24. The device of claim 23 , wherein the square root of the product of Q1 and Q2 is greater than 100.

25. The device of claim 24 , wherein at least one of the high-Q resonators is tunable.

26. The device of claim 19 , wherein the mobile electronic device is configured to receive the power from a source resonator in a source resonator enclosure via the high-Q resonator when the source resonator enclosure and the mobile electronic device are not physically contacting each other, and wherein the source resonator is configured to generate the oscillating magnetic field.
