Abstract

Instrumentation for preparation of a bone includes a first guide having a first collet and a second collet. The first and second collets are formed around divergent first and second axes, and share a common opening. A bone preparation instrument may be inserted into each of the collets toward a bone. A second guide may be carried in the first guide, and a bone preparation instrument inserted through the second guide toward the bone, along a third axis.

Claims (40)

1. A system for preparing a bone, the system comprising:

a first guide, the first guide comprising:

a first collet comprising a first opening, the first collet having a proximal end and a distal end, a first bore extending therethrough between the first opening at the proximal end and the distal end of the first collet along a first axis, the first bore is radially centered about the first axis;

a second collet comprising a second opening separate from the first opening, the second collet having a proximal end and a distal end and a second bore extending therethrough between the second opening at the proximal end and the distal end of the second collet along a second axis, the second bore is radially centered about the second axis, and the second collet comprising a guide slot extending along at least a portion of the second collet, the guide slot further comprising a guide track,

wherein the first bore and the second bore intersect and partially overlap one another at each of the distal ends of the first and second bore; and

wherein the first and second axes diverge away from one another at an angle as the first axis extends from the distal end to the proximal end of the first collet and the second axis extends from the distal end to the proximal end of the second collet; and

a second guide receivable within the guide slot of the first guide and having an axial rail and a third bore,

wherein the third bore is centered about a third axis, wherein the third axis is non-parallel to the first axis and the second axis when the second guide is received within the guide slot, and wherein the axial rail is receivable in the guide track along a straight path to secure the second guide within the guide slot in a selected orientation; and

the system further comprising a clamping apparatus having a first clamp arm connected to a second clamp arm, wherein the first guide is attached to at least one of the first and second clamp arms of the clamping apparatus, and the clamping apparatus is actuable to increase and decrease a distance between the first clamp arm and the second clamp arm, thereby increasing and decreasing a distance between the first guide and a corresponding one of the first and second clamp arms.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first bore defines a first cylindrical envelope and the second bore defines a second cylindrical envelope, wherein the first and second cylindrical envelopes partially overlap one another.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first bore and the second bore each comprise a radial diameter, wherein the radial diameters of the first and second bores are equal.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first bore and the second bore each comprise a radial diameter, wherein the radial diameters of the first and second bores are unequal.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first and second collets share a common distal end.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the proximal ends of the first and second collets are separated from one another.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the angle is between about 20° and about 60°.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the angle is between about 30° and about 50°.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the angle is 40°.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first bore is partially defined by a semicircular first wall extending between the proximal end and the distal end of the first collet, and the second bore is partially defined by a semicircular second wall extending between the proximal end and the distal end of the second collet.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein at least one of the first and second semicircular walls has a window extending through the semicircular wall and in communication with the respective bore.

12. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a V-shaped connecting bridge formed between the first and second collets.

13. The system of claim 10 , wherein the first semicircular wall is shaped to receive and guide a bone preparation instrument through the first bore along the first axis, and the second semicircular wall is shaped to receive and guide a bone preparation instrument through the second bore along the second axis.

14. A system for preparing a bone, the system comprising:

a first guide, the first guide comprising:

a first collet having a first opening, the first collet having a proximal end and a distal end, a first bore extending therethrough between the first opening at the proximal end and the distal end of the first collet along a first axis, the first bore is radially centered about the first axis;

a second collet having a second opening, the second collet having a proximal end and a distal end and a second bore extending therethrough between the second opening at the proximal end and the distal end of the second collet along a second axis, the second bore is radially centered about the second axis, and the second collet comprising a guide slot extending along at least a portion of the second collet, the guide slot further comprising a guide track; and

a V-shaped connecting bridge formed between the first and second collets, the V-shaped connecting bridge separating the first opening from the second opening; and

wherein the first and second axes diverge away from one another at an angle as the first axis extends from the distal end to the proximal end of the first collet and the second axis extends from the distal end to the proximal end of the second collet; and

a second guide receivable within the guide slot of the first guide and having an axial rail and a third bore, wherein the third bore is centered about a third axis, wherein the third axis is non-parallel to the first axis and the second axis when the second guide is received within the guide slot, and wherein the axial rail is receivable in the guide track along a straight path to secure the second guide within the guide slot in a selected orientation, and

wherein the first bore defines a first cylindrical envelope and the second bore defines a second cylindrical envelope, wherein the first and second cylindrical envelopes intersect and partially overlap one another at each of the distal ends of the first and second bore; and

the system further comprising a clamping apparatus having a first clamp arm connected to a second clamp arm, wherein the first guide is attached to at least one of the first and second clamp arms of the clamping apparatus, and the clamping apparatus is actuable to increase and decrease a distance between the first clamp arm and the second clamp arm, thereby increasing and decreasing a distance between the first guide and a corresponding one of the first and second clamp arms.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the first bore and the second bore each comprise a radial diameter, wherein the radial diameters of the first and second bores are equal.
