Three-way and four-way switching circuit
A three-way or four-way switching circuit for lighting, and the like, is described. One three-way switch is replaced with an electronic switch. Both legs of the switching circuit are powered all the time and current is sensed in the legs to determine when one of the three-way or four-way switches has been switched. This information is used to turn the light on and off.
1. An apparatus for replacing a three-way switch in a three-way or four-way lighting circuit having a light, where the switch receives an AC power line signal and two switched legs comprising:
a first cell coupled across the light to turn the light on and off;
a DC power supply coupled across the light to provide power to the first cell;
a connection the AC power line signal to both switched legs for most of an AC cycle;
at least one current sensor to sense a current in at least one of the switched legs; and
a second cell coupled to the current sensor to send a signal to the first cell in response to the at least one current sensor sensing a current change in one of the switched legs.
2. The apparatus defined by claim 1 , further comprising:
a manual switch, wherein the second cell to detect a state of the manual switch.
3. The apparatus defined by claim 2 , further comprising:
a switched leg power supply to provide AC power to the second cell.
4. A system comprising:
a load, the load coupled to a neutral line and a first hot line;
a first cell coupled across the load to control a state of the load;
a power supply coupled across the load to provide power to the first cell;
a three-way switch coupled to the load via the first hot line;
at least one current sensor to sense current from a second hot line to a four-way switch coupled to the 3-way switch; and
a second cell coupled to the at least one current sensor, the second cell to communicate with the first cell in response to a change in the sensed current.
5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the second hot line is a switched leg supply.
6. The system of claim 4 , wherein the load is a light.
7. The system of claim 5 , wherein the first and second cells to communicate using power line communications.
8. The system of claim 5 , wherein the first and second cells to communicate using radio frequency communications.
9. The system of claim 5 , wherein the first and second cells to communicate over a twisted pair network line.
10. The system of claim 5 , wherein the power supply is DC power supply.
11. The system of claim 5 , further comprising a user switch coupled to the second cell.
12. The system of claim 5 , further comprising:
a switch connected controlled by the first cell to control the load.
