Abstract

An electro-wetting display apparatus includes a first base substrate, a plurality of first electrodes on the first base substrate, an insulating layer which overlaps the first electrodes, a pixel wall on the insulating layer, where the pixel wall partitions a plurality of pixels respectively corresponding to the plurality of first electrodes, a second base substrate which face the first base substrate, a second electrode on the second base substrate and including a plurality of openings, and a fluid between the first base substrate and the second base substrate and in the plurality of pixels. The movement of the fluid in the plurality of pixels is controlled by voltages respectively applied to the first electrodes and the second electrode.

Claims (50)

1. An electro-wetting display apparatus comprising:

a first base substrate;

a plurality of first electrodes on the first base substrate;

an insulating layer which overlaps the plurality of first electrodes;

a pixel wall on the insulating layer, wherein the pixel wall partitions a plurality of pixels which respectively corresponds to the plurality of first electrodes;

a second base substrate which faces the first base substrate;

a second electrode on the second base substrate, wherein the second electrode is substantially aligned with portions of the pixel wall, wherein the second electrode includes a plurality of openings, and wherein each opening of the plurality of openings has a shape and size that substantially corresponds to a shape and size of one or more pixels of the plurality of pixels; and

a fluid between the first base substrate and the second base substrate, and respectively in the plurality of pixels,

wherein a movement of the fluid in the plurality of pixels is controlled by voltages which are respectively applied to the plurality of first electrodes and the second electrode.

2. The electro-wetting display apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the shape and size of each opening substantially corresponds to the shape and size of a single pixel.

3. The electro-wetting display apparatus of claim 2 , wherein

each of the plurality of openings has a rectangular shape, and

a width of the pixel wall between two adjacent pixels is smaller than a width of the second electrode between two adjacent openings.

4. The electro-wetting display apparatus of claim 2 , wherein

each of the plurality of openings has a rectangular shape, and

a width of the pixel wall between two adjacent pixels is larger than a width of the second electrode between two adjacent openings.

5. The electro-wetting display apparatus of claim 2 , wherein

each of the plurality of openings has a rectangular shape, and

a width of the pixel wall between two adjacent pixels is equal to a width of the second electrode between two adjacent openings.

6. The electro-wetting display apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the fluid comprises:

a first fluid which transmits light; and

a second fluid which blocks light and is separate from the first fluid, wherein the second fluid separate from the first fluid forms a boundary therebetween.

7. The electro-wetting display apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the first fluid in a pixel is polarized by the voltages which are respectively applied to the first electrode and the second electrode, contacts the insulating layer, and displaces the second fluid to a side of the pixel.

8. The electro-wetting display apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the pixel wall has a height higher than a height of the second fluid which is displaced to the side of the pixel.

9. The electro-wetting display apparatus of claim 1 , wherein each opening of the plurality of openings has a shape and a size that substantially corresponds to the shape and size of two or more pixels of the plurality of pixels.

10. The electro-wetting display apparatus of claim 1 , wherein each opening of the plurality of openings has a shape and a size that substantially corresponds to the shape and size of three or more pixels of the plurality of pixels.

11. The electro-wetting display apparatus of claim 9 , wherein

each of the plurality of openings has a rectangular shape, and

a width of the pixel wall between two adjacent pixels is smaller than a width of the second electrode between two adjacent openings.

12. The electro-wetting display apparatus of claim 1 , wherein each opening of the plurality of openings has a shape and a size that substantially corresponds to the shape and size of four pixels of the plurality of pixels arranged in a two by two configuration.

13. The electro-wetting display apparatus of claim 1 , wherein each opening of the plurality of openings has a shape and a size that substantially corresponds to the shape and size of six pixels of the plurality of pixels arranged in a two by three configuration.

14. The electro-wetting display apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a reflective layer which reflects a light incident thereto, wherein the reflective layer is between the first base substrate and the insulating layer which overlaps the first electrodes.

15. The electro-wetting display apparatus of claim 10 , wherein

each of the plurality of openings has a rectangular shape, and

a width of the pixel wall between two adjacent pixels is smaller than a width of the second electrode between two adjacent openings.

16. The electro-wetting display apparatus of claim 12 , wherein

each of the plurality of openings has a substantially square shape, and

a width of the pixel wall between two adjacent pixels is smaller than a width of the second electrode between two adjacent openings.

17. The electro-wetting display apparatus of claim 13 , wherein

each of the plurality of openings has a substantially rectangular shape, and

a width of the pixel wall between two adjacent pixels is smaller than a width of the second electrode between two adjacent openings.

18. An electro-wetting display apparatus comprising:

a first base substrate;

a plurality of first electrodes on the first base substrate;

an insulating layer which overlaps the plurality of first electrodes;

a pixel wall on the insulating layer, wherein the pixel wall partitions a plurality of pixels which respectively corresponds to the plurality of first electrodes;

a second base substrate which faces the first base substrate;
