Abstract

A building material comprising a substrate layer and a pressure-sensitive adhesive layer, where the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer includes expandable graphite.

Claims (29)

1. A pressure-sensitive tape comprising:

(i) an extruded layer of a pressure-sensitive adhesive, and

(ii) expandable graphite, where the expandable graphite has an onset temperature of at least 130° C. and is dispersed throughout a matrix formed by pressure-sensitive adhesive.

2. The pressure-sensitive tape of claim 1 , where the expandable graphite is in the form of a layer or concentrated region within the pressure-sensitive adhesive.

3. The pressure-sensitive tape of claim 1 , further comprising a release liner.

4. The pressure-sensitive tape of claim 1 , where the tape is in the form of a generally planar article having first and second opposing planar surfaces, where the first planar surface is removably attached to a release liner, and where the second planar surface is removable attaché to a release liner.

5. The building material of 1 , where the expandable graphite has an onset temperature of at least 160° C.

6. A building material comprising:

(i) a substrate layer;

(ii) an extruded pressure-sensitive adhesive layer, and

(iii) expandable graphite, where the expandable graphite has an onset temperature of at least 130° C. and is dispersed throughout a matrix formed by pressure-sensitive adhesive.

7. The building material of claim 6 , where the substrate is a polymeric film, a foil, or a fabric.

8. The building material of claim 6 , where the expandable graphite is in the form of a layer or concentrated region within the pressure-sensitive adhesive.

9. The building material of claim 6 , where the building material is a roofing membrane.

10. The building material of claim 9 , where the substrate is a thermoplastic or thermoset membrane.

11. The building material of claim 6 , where the building material is a moisture barrier.

12. The building material of claim 11 , where the substrate is a polymeric film, a fabric, or a foil.

13. The building material of claim 6 , where the building material is a roofing underlayment.

14. The building material of claim 13 , where the substrate is a polymeric film, a fabric, or a foil.

15. The building material of claim 13 , where the building material is an underlayment that meets the specifications of ASTM D1970.

16. The building material of claim 6 , where the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer includes a polystyrene block copolymer.

17. The building material of claim 6 , where the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer includes butyl rubber.

18. The building material of 6 , where the expandable graphite has an onset temperature of at least 160° C.

19. A roof structure comprising:

i. a roof substrate; and

ii. a membrane secured to the roof substrate; where the membrane is secured to the roof substrate through an extruded pressure-sensitive adhesive, where expandable graphite is in contact with the extruded pressure-sensitive adhesive, and where the expandable graphite has an onset temperature of at least 130° C. and is dispersed throughout a matrix formed by pressure-sensitive adhesive.

20. The building material of 19 , where the expandable graphite is in the form of a layer or concentrated region in contact with the pressure-sensitive adhesive.

21. The building material of claim 10 , where the substrate is an EPDM membrane that meets the specifications of ASTM D4637.

22. The building material of claim 10 , where the substrate is a thermoplastic membrane that meets the specifications of D6878-03.
