Abstract

An implantable article and method are disclosed for treating pelvic floor disorders such as vaginal vault prolase. A surgical kit useful for performing a surgical procedure such as a sacral colpopexy is also described.

Claims (42)

1. An implantable surgical article useful to treat vaginal vault prolapse during a sacral colpopexy procedure, the article comprising

a thin, substantially flat major strip having proximal and distal ends, and a length and a width along first and second orthogonal axes;

a thin, substantially flat minor strip having a length less than that of the major strip, and a pair of ends;

the minor strip being secured to the major strip along an end of the minor strip such that a substantial portion of the minor strip can extend along an axis that is perpendicular to both the first and second axes;

wherein a portion of the major strip near its distal end and the minor strip may be sutured to a vaginal cuff of a patient; and

a portion of the implant includes indicia indicative of proper orientation of the article during placement at the vaginal cuff.

2. A surgical article according to claim 1 wherein the minor strip has a straight end and the minor strip is secured to the major strip along substantially all of the end of the minor strip.

3. A surgical article according to claim 1 wherein the minor strip has a distal end and the distal ends of the major and minor strips are substantially aligned.

4. An implantable surgical article as recited at claim 1 wherein a width of the major strip decreases along a length of the major strip in a direction of increasing distance away from the minor strip.

5. An implantable surgical article as recited at claim 1 wherein the minor strip has a width, the distal end of the major strip has a width, and the width of the minor strip is the same as the width of the distal end of the major strip.

6. An implantable surgical article as recited at claim 1 wherein the minor strip has a coloration, the distal end of the major strip has a coloration, and the coloration of the minor strip is the same as the coloration of the distal end of the major strip.

7. An implantable surgical article as recited at claim 1 wherein the minor strip has a coloration, the distal end of the major strip has a coloration, and the coloration of the minor strip is different from the coloration of the distal end of the major strip.

8. An implantable surgical article as recited at claim 1 wherein the indicia is blue.

9. An implantable surgical article as recited at claim 1 wherein

a width of the major strip decreases along a length of the major strip in a direction of increasing distance away from the minor strip,

the minor strip has a width, the distal end of the major strip has a width, and the width of the minor strip is the same as the width of the distal end of the major strip,

the minor strip has a coloration, the distal end of the major strip has a coloration, and the coloration of the minor strip is the same as the coloration of the distal end of the major strip, and

wherein the indicia is blue.

10. An implantable article as recited at claim 1 wherein the minor strip has a distal end and the distal ends of the major and minor strips are substantially aligned.

11. A method of performing sacrocolpopexy in a female patient, the method comprising:

providing an implantable surgical article as recited at claim 1 ,

creating an incision in the patient,

attaching the minor strip to tissue of a vaginal apex of the patient,

attaching the distal end of the major strip to tissue of a vaginal apex of the patient, and

attaching the proximal end of the major strip to sacral fascia.

12. A method as recited at claim 11 wherein the incision is a vaginal incision.

13. A method as recited at claim 11 wherein the incision is a laparoscopic incision.

14. A method as recited at claim 11 wherein attaching to sacral fascia comprises attaching to an anterior longitudinal ligament of the patient.

15. A method as recited at claim 11 wherein attaching to sacral fascia comprises attaching to sacral soft tissue.

16. A method of performing sacrocolpopexy in a female patient, the method comprising:

providing an implantable surgical article as recited at claim 9 ,

creating an incision in the patient,

attaching the minor strip to tissue of a vaginal apex of the patient,

attaching the distal end of the major strip to tissue of a vaginal apex of the patient, and

attaching the proximal end of the major strip to a location at a region of a sacrum of the patient.

17. A method as recited at claim 13 wherein the incision is a vaginal incision.

18. A method as recited at claim 13 wherein the incision is a laparoscopic incision.

19. An implantable surgical article as recited at claim 1 comprising:

a first tissue engagement portion comprising a proximal end and a distal end,

a second tissue engagement portion comprising a proximal end and a distal end, the proximal end of the second tissue engagement portion being secured to the proximal end of the first tissue engagement portion, and

a base portion comprising a proximal end and a distal end, the distal end secured to the proximal end of the first tissue engagement portion and to the proximal end of the second tissue engagement portion, the base portion extending to the base portion proximal end along a length in direction away from the first and second tissue engagement portions,

wherein a width of the base portion is less than a width of the first tissue engagement portion and the second tissue engagement portion.
