Abstract

A system and method for providing positioning freedom, and support of different voltages, protocols, and power levels in a wireless power system. In accordance with an embodiment, the system comprises a base unit having one or more transmitter coils; one or more components including a ferromagnetic, ferrite, or other magnetic material or layer, that modify the magnitude and/or phase of an electromagnetic field in one or multiple dimensions; and one or more components within the base unit and/or the mobile device, for positioning freedom, and support of different voltages, protocols, and power levels. In accordance with various embodiments, the base unit and mobile device can communicate with each other prior to and/or during charging or powering to determine a protocol to be used to charge or power the mobile device.

wherein, when the mobile device or battery having the receiver coil is placed close to the base unit having the one or more transmitter coils, the switching layer's magnetic properties are locally modified, by one or more of a magnetic field of the receiver coil, or by another magnetic component, to guide magnetic flux to provide localized power transfer within a particular region of the switching layer generally aligned with the receiver coil;

a microcontroller within the base unit or the mobile device, for support of different voltages, protocols, and power levels, including determining by the base unit, for the mobile device to be charged or powered, a charging protocol from within a plurality of different charging protocols to be used, and one or more voltage and power level requirements for the mobile device; and

a regulator for regulating, by the mobile device, power received at the receiver coil, including communicating between the receiver and the base unit, using the particular charging protocol, information used by the base unit to make appropriate adjustments to provide a required output voltage, current or power at the receiver output;

wherein multiple mobile devices, batteries or receivers with different voltage or power level requirements can be simultaneously charged or powered by the base unit.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the base unit and mobile device communicate with each other prior to or during charging or powering to determine a protocol to be used to charge or power the mobile device.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the base unit and mobile device communicate with each other through a separate coil, radio frequency link, or optical communication, to determine a type of base unit and mobile device.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the base unit and mobile device communicate with each other to verify the authenticity, power requirements or other characteristics of the mobile device or a battery therein or verify or handshake the presence of the mobile device proximate the base unit.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the base unit or mobile device includes a microcontroller that makes appropriate adjustments to achieve a desired output voltage, current or power, to be used using in charging or powering the mobile device.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the base unit periodically pings for the presence of a mobile device in proximity to the base unit, and wherein a receiver coil or receiver thereby activated performs an initiation process whereby its ID, presence, power, voltage or other requirements are communicated to the base unit.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the base unit or mobile device includes a microcontroller that implements in firmware an algorithm for supporting multiple different charging protocols, for use with the mobile device, or to communicate parameters to increase or decrease power or voltage provided to the receiver coil or receiver.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the switching layer is used to provide a degree of position independence in charging or powering the one or more devices or batteries.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the modifying the magnitude or phase of the electromagnetic field in one or multiple dimensions includes locally modifying the properties of the switching layer so that it acts as a switching layer, allowing a transmitter coil electromagnetic field to be preferentially transmitted through a locally modified area.
