Abstract

A blood pump apparatus includes a housing having a blood inlet port and blood outlet port, a pump unit including an impeller that rotates within the housing, and an impeller rotational torque generation section. The housing includes a plurality of magnetic members embedded between the impeller and the impeller rotational torque generation section for transmitting a magnetically attractive force generated by the impeller rotational torque generation section to an impeller body. The pump device includes a non-contact bearing mechanism for rotating the impeller without contacting with the inner surface of the housing when the impeller is rotated by the impeller rotational torque generation section.

Claims (18)

1. A blood pump apparatus, comprising:

an impeller rotatably positioned in a blood chamber to transfer blood from a blood inlet port through the blood chamber and to a blood outlet port, wherein a plurality of first magnetic members are embedded in the impeller so that the impeller and the plurality of first magnetic material members rotate together within the blood chamber;

a motor that is positioned adjacent the blood chamber and that is separated from the blood chamber by a partition member, to generate a magnetic force to rotate the impeller; and

a plurality of second magnetic members each partially embedded in the partition member for transmitting the magnetic force generated by the motor to the first magnetic members of the impeller.

2. The blood pump apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the blood chamber is formed within a housing of the blood pump apparatus, and the housing is formed of a metal or synthetic resin material.

3. The blood pump apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the impeller is formed of a metal or synthetic resin material.

4. The blood pump apparatus of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of first magnetic members is formed of a permanent magnetic material.

5. The blood pump apparatus of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of second magnetic members is formed of a permanent magnetic material.

6. The blood pump apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of grooves formed in or on a surface that defines the blood chamber or in or on a surface that defines the impeller.

7. The blood pump apparatus of claim 6 , wherein each of the plurality of grooves is formed in or on the surface in an inward-spiral shape.

8. The blood pump apparatus of claim 6 , wherein each of the plurality of grooves has a depth of about 0.005 to 0.400 millimeters.

9. The blood pump apparatus of claim 6 , wherein a number of the plurality of grooves is selected from a number between 6 to 36.

10. The blood pump apparatus of claim 6 , wherein a corner portion of each of the plurality of grooves has a radius of curvature of at least 0.050 millimeters.

11. The blood pump apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the plurality of grooves are formed on the surface at a particular angular interval about a center axis of the impeller.

12. The blood pump apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the motor includes a plurality of circumferentially positioned stators which each include a stator core and a stator coil wound around the stator core, and each of the plurality of second magnetic members are positioned in circumferential alignment with a respective one of the stator cores of the stators.

13. The blood pump apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the blood inlet port comprises a hollow member that is in fluid communication with the blood chamber.

14. The blood pump apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the blood outlet port comprises a hollow member that is in fluid communication with the blood chamber.

15. The blood pump apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the blood inlet port and the blood outlet port are formed so that blood flow into the blood chamber from the blood inlet port is in a direction tangential to blood flow out of the blood chamber through the blood outlet port.
