Abstract

A method for estimating a strength of a radio frequency signal according to one embodiment includes receiving a correlator magnitude signal from a correlator module; performing a gain scaling on the correlator magnitude signal; and averaging the scaled correlator magnitude signal or value associated therewith to generate an output indicative of a strength of the signal. Such methodology may also be implemented as a system using logic for performing the various operations. Additional systems and methods are also presented.

Claims (27)

1. A method for estimating a strength of a radio frequency signal, the method comprising:

receiving a correlator magnitude signal from a correlator module;

performing a gain scaling on the correlator magnitude signal; and

filtering the scaled correlator magnitude signal or value associated therewith to generate an output indicative of a strength of the radio frequency signal.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the correlator module has a variable effective length which is changeable based on a data rate of the radio frequency signal.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the variable effective length affects an offset used to generate the output indicative of the strength of the radio frequency signal.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the correlator module receives output from a preintegrator, wherein the preintegrator has a variable effective length which is changeable based on a data rate of the radio frequency signal.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the variable effective length affects an offset used to generate the output indicative of the strength of the radio frequency signal.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising setting a coarse strength level based on a shift signal from an automatic gain control module to sum with the filtered scaled correlator magnitude signal.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising using the output to estimate a distance between an antenna and a tag.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising using the output to estimate a density of an object between an antenna and a tag.

9. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the gain scaling narrows a range of the scaled correlator magnitude signal relative to the correlator magnitude signal.

10. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the filtering is performed using a dedicated loop.

11. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the filtering renders an average of the scaled correlator magnitude signal.

12. A system for estimating a strength of a radio frequency signal, the system comprising:

a correlator module implemented at least in part in hardware;

logic implemented at least in part in hardware, the logic being configured to receive a correlator magnitude signal from the correlator module;

logic configured to perform a gain scaling on the correlator magnitude signal; and

logic configured to filter the scaled correlator magnitude signal or value associated therewith to generate an output indicative of a strength of the radio frequency signal.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the correlator module has a variable effective length which is changeable based on a data rate of the radio frequency signal.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the variable effective length affects an offset used to generate the output indicative of the strength of the radio frequency signal.

15. The system of claim 12 , further comprising a preintegrator having a variable effective length which is changeable based on a data rate of the radio frequency signal, wherein the correlator receives output from the preintegrator.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the variable effective length affects an offset used to generate the output indicative of the strength of the radio frequency signal.

17. The system of claim 12 , further comprising logic configured to set a coarse strength level based on a shift signal from an automatic gain control module to sum with the filtered scaled correlator magnitude signal.

18. The system of claim 12 , further comprising logic configured to use the output to estimate a distance between an antenna and a tag.

19. The system of claim 12 , further comprising logic configured to use the output to estimate a density of an object between an antenna and a tag.

20. The system of claim 12 , further comprising at least one antenna for receiving the radio frequency signal.
