Abstract

A method of making a core-stiffened structure includes the steps of providing a honeycomb core having an adhesive disposed on first and second surfaces thereof, providing a first skin and a second skin, and assembling the first skin, the second skin, and the honeycomb core to form the core-stiffened structure. The method further includes the steps of curing the core-stiffened structure and inhibiting at least one of the first skin and the second skin from protruding into at least one cell of the honeycomb core during the step of curing the core-stiffened structure.

Claims (32)

1. A method of making a core-stiffened structure, comprising:

providing a honeycomb core having an adhesive disposed on first and second surfaces thereof;

providing a first skin and a second skin;

assembling the first skin, the second skin, and the honeycomb core to form the core-stiffened structure;

curing the core-stiffened structure;

inhibiting at least one of the first skin and the second skin from protruding into at least one cell of the honeycomb core during the step of curing the core-stiffened structure;

wherein the providing the honeycomb core includes:

providing the honeycomb core having passages extending between cells thereof; and

wherein the inhibiting at least one of the first skin and the second skin from protruding into at least one cell of the honeycomb core comprises:

providing a plug; and

placing a plug in the at least one of the cell of the honeycomb core prior to performing the step of curing the core-stiffened structure; and

removing the plug from the at least one cell of the honeycomb core through the passages after performing the step of curing the core-stiffened structure.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the removing the plug comprises:

flushing a solvent through the honeycomb core.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the removing the plug comprises:

melting the plug and evacuating the melted plug from the honeycomb core.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the removing the plug comprises:

vibrating the core-stiffened structure.

5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the removing the plug comprises:

compromising the physical integrity of the plug through a chemical reaction.

6. The method according to claim 1 ,

wherein the inhibiting at least one of the first skin and the second skin from protruding into at least one cell of the honeycomb core comprises:

providing a plug comprising one of a magnetorheological fluid and a ferrofluid;

placing the one of the magnetorheological fluid and the ferrofluid in the at least one of the cell of the honeycomb core prior to performing the step of curing the core-stiffened structure;

subjecting the one of the magnetorheological fluid and the ferrofluid to a magnetic field during the step of curing the core-stiffened structure;

withdrawing the magnetic field from interacting with the one of the magnetorheological fluid and the ferrofluid after performing the step of curing the core-stiffened structure; and

removing the one of the magnetorheological fluid and the ferrofluid from the at least one cell of the honeycomb core through the passages after performing the step of curing the core-stiffened structure.

7. The method according to claim 1 ,

wherein the inhibiting at least one of the first skin and the second skin from protruding into at least one cell of the honeycomb core comprises:

providing a plug comprising a plurality of beads; and

placing the plurality of beads in the at least one of the cell of the honeycomb core prior to performing the step of curing the core-stiffened structure; and

removing the plurality of beads from the at least one cell of the honeycomb core through the passages after performing the step of curing the core-stiffened structure.
