Abstract

Discloses herein is a method to make a transparent conductive electrode. The methods comprises providing a substrate, forming a film comprising a first region having a plurality of metal nanowires, wherein at least some of metal nanowires are surface functionalized and inert to oxidation or acid reactions; evaporating away the solvent in the metal nanowire film; exposing the nanowire film to a chemical reagent; forming a second region comprising nanowires, and annealing the film having the first and second region, wherein the resistivity difference between the first and second region is more than 1000.

Claims (26)

1. A method of patterning a conductive electrode comprises

providing a substrate,

forming a film using a plurality of metal nanowires, wherein at least some of the metal nanowires are surface functionalized and inert to oxidation or acid reactions and the part of the film having the surface functionalized metal nanowires is a first region and the rest of the film is the second region, said surface functionalized metal nanowires have a first portion surface functionalized and a second portion that is not surface functionalized, wherein surface functionalization is a means for protecting the nanowire from oxidization and acid reactions;

evaporating away solvent in the film;

exposing the film to a chemical reagent which reacts with the metal nanowires in the second region; and

annealing the film,

wherein after annealing, the resistivity difference between the first and second region is more than 1000.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the difference in refractive indexes between the first and second region are less than 0.05.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the difference in haze difference between the first and second region are less than 0.2%.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprise preparing a mixture of nanowires having fully surface functionalized nanowire and non-surface functionalized nanowires.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprise preparing a mixture of nanowires having surface functionalized nanowire.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the metal is silver.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second region comprises a silver oxide.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second region comprises a silver salt.

9. The method of claim 2 , further comprising providing a mask over the film before exposing the film to a chemical reagent.

10. A method of patterning the conductive electrode comprises

providing a substrate,

forming a film using silver nanowires wherein some of the nanowires have a portion(s) which is surface functionalized and inert to oxidation or acid etching, and the part of the film having the surface functionalized portions of the nanowires is a first region and the rest of the film is the second region, said surface functionalized metal nanowires have a first portion surface functionalized and a second portion that is not surface functionalized, wherein surface functionalization is a means for protecting the nanowire from oxidization and acid reactions,

exposing the film to etchants or oxidants and

reacting at least the portions of the nanowires in the second region with oxidants/acids,

disintegrating at least the portions of the nanowire in the second region into segments;

wherein the arrangement of surface functionalized portion(s) and non-surface functionalized portion(s) on the nanowire can be regularly or randomly pitched.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the non-surface functionalized portion(s) randomly pitched has coverage defects on the nanowires.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the non-surface functionalized portion(s) randomly pitched-has insufficient coverage of surface molecule assembly.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the entire nanowire in the second region are reacted.

14. The method of claim 10 , wherein the entire nanowire in the second region are disintegrated.
