Abstract

Devices, systems and methods for processing cellulosic material to produce fermentable sugars are provided. Devices, systems and methods for increasing fermentation rates of microbes via biostimulation are provided. Electrodes are preferably positioned along an interior or exterior of a tube-shaped component to administer electromagnetic/electric pulses to a solution comprising a microbe. Systems can advantageously be used in new biofuels production plants, or in existing biofuels production plants without the need for significant retrofits.

Claims (17)

1. A method for processing cellulosic biomass, comprising:

feeding a first set of electric pulses to a solution comprising the cellulosic biomass, wherein the first set of electric pulses is fed to the solution at a first frequency; and

feeding a second set of electrical pulses to the solution at a second frequency different from the first frequency, at one or more voltages of at least 500 V/cm to produce fermentable sugars.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second frequency is an integer multiple of the first frequency.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second frequency is a multiple of two of the first frequency.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising feeding a third set of electrical pulses to the solution at a third frequency, wherein the third frequency is a multiple of at least one of the first and second frequencies.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising feeding an acidifier to the solution to reduce formation of side products.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising fermenting the fermentable sugars using a microbe, wherein at least one of the first frequency and the second frequency is partially dependent on the microbe to increase a rate of fermentation.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the steps of feeding the first set and second set of electrical pulses occurs at a pressure below 2 atm.

8. A method for processing cellulosic biomass, comprising feeding a plurality of electrical pulse sets to a solution comprising the cellulosic biomass, wherein the plurality of electrical pulse sets falls within a frequency range from 8 MHz to 12 MHz to produce fermentable sugars.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein a first electrical pulse set of the plurality of electrical pulse sets is fed at a first frequency, and wherein a second electrical pulse set of the plurality of electrical pulse sets is fed at a second frequency that is a multiple of the first frequency.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the multiple is other than one.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein the plurality of electrical pulse sets are fed as progressively higher frequency pulses.

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein processing the cellulosic biomass into fermentable sugars is suitable for a production of ethanol without a use of an enzyme.

13. The method of claim 8 , wherein at least some of the plurality of electrical pulse sets are fed under an acidic condition.

14. The method of claim 8 , further comprising fermenting the fermentable sugars using a microbe, wherein at least one of the first frequency and the second frequency is partially dependent on the microbe to increase a rate of fermentation.

15. The method of claim 8 , wherein the steps of feeding the plurality of electrical pulse sets occurs at a pressure below 2 atm.
