Low saturated-fat sunflower and associated methods
Provided are sunflowers, parts thereof, cultures of, and seeds that are capable of producing sunflower oil that is low in saturated fat as well as associated methods.
1. A vegetable oil obtained from seeds of a sunflower cultivar that has been genetically modified by plant breeding, wherein the oil has a fatty acid profile comprising 3% or less total combined palmitic acid (16:0) and stearic acid (18:0) content, wherein the fatty acid profile comprising 3% or less total combined palmitic acid (16:0) and stearic acid (18:0) content is stabilized in seed oil of the sunflower cultivar, and wherein the genome of the sunflower cultivar and seed oil obtained thereof comprises the polynucleotide of SEQ ID NO: 13, wherein the nucleotide at position 60 of the polynucleotide is a cytosine (C), the nucleotide at position 181 of the polynucleotide is a guanine (G), the nucleotide at position 258 of the polynucleotide is a cytosine (C), and the nucleotide at position 261 of the polynucleotide is a thymine (T).
