Abstract

Various medical devices and methods for cutting, evacuating and/or performing work on tissue are provided. The devices and methods may utilize a reciprocating mechanism or motor powered by suction from a vacuum source. The medical devices and methods may be used on tissue in various regions of a patient's body and for treating various conditions, e.g., for performing a polypectomy.

Claims (22)

1. A tissue cutting device comprising:

an elongate shaft having a proximal end, a distal end and a lumen defined therein, wherein the distal end includes an opening for receiving tissue, wherein the distal end includes a malleable portion, wherein the malleable portion is hand adjustable and does not require the use of a separate tool, wherein the malleable portion is configured to be manipulated into a desired configuration prior to entering a patient's body and to maintain the desired configuration within the patient's body to access a variety of anatomical locations;

a cutting mechanism positioned within the distal end of the elongate shaft, wherein the cutting mechanism is configured to be actuated within the distal end of the elongate shaft and past the opening to cut tissue in the opening, and wherein manipulation of the malleable portion causes manipulation of the cutting mechanism and opening;

a chamber coupled to the proximal end of the elongate shaft, the chamber having a cutting mechanism driver assembly positioned therein; and

an evacuation shaft positioned in the elongate shaft and having an evacuation lumen which is in fluid communication with the opening in the elongate shaft for evacuating and removing cut tissue through the opening; and

an irrigant lumen, wherein the irrigant lumen is configured to deliver irrigant to a distal portion of the evacuation lumen, wherein the irrigant does not flow through the irrigant lumen unless suction from a vacuum source is present to draw the irrigant through the irrigant lumen.

2. The device of claim 1 , further comprising an electrocautery element positioned at a distal end of the elongate shaft.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the opening is positioned on a side of the distal portion of the elongate shaft.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the distal end of the elongate shaft comprises slits in the elongate shaft which allow for bending or twisting of the elongate shaft.

5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the evacuation shaft is positioned within the elongate shaft and the evacuation lumen includes a variable diameter to optimize tissue resection rate or tissue evacuation rate.

6. The device of claim 1 , wherein the chamber is in the form of an ergonomic handle.

7. The device of claim 6 , wherein the handle is positioned at an angle relative to the elongate shaft thereby providing a clear line of sight above and/or to the side of the elongate shaft.

8. The device of claim 1 , wherein a tissue collection chamber is integrated in the device wherein removal of the chamber disables the device.

9. The device of claim 1 , wherein the cutting mechanism includes a cutting blade and the cutting blade is not exposed on an outside of the opening to provide safety to patients.

10. The device of claim 1 , further comprising an electrocautery element positioned at a distal end of the elongate shaft.

11. The device of claim 1 , wherein the device is fully disposable.

12. The device of claim 1 , wherein the cutting mechanism driver assembly is powered by vacuum, battery power, gas power, electrical power or compressed air.

13. The device of claim 1 , wherein the cutting mechanism driver assembly is powered solely by suction created by a vacuum source.

14. The device of claim 1 , further comprising an outer sheath, wherein the outer sheath provides a covering on the elongate shaft.

15. The device of claim 1 , where malleable portion can be articulated into the desired configuration of an arc up to 180 degrees.

16. The device of claim 1 , where the cutting member is configured to be actuated in an axial direction relative to the opening.

17. The device of claim 1 , where the cutting mechanism is configured to be actuated in a rotary motion past the opening.
