Abstract

A capacitor provides a plurality of selectable capacitance values, by selective connection of six capacitor sections of a capacitive element each having a capacitance value. The capacitor sections are provided in a plurality of wound cylindrical capacitive elements. Two vertically stacked wound cylindrical capacitance elements may each provide three capacitor sections. There may be six separately wound cylindrical capacitive elements each providing a capacitor section. The capacitor sections have a common element terminal.

Claims (31)

1. An apparatus comprising:

a case capable of receiving at least five capacitive elements, one or more of the capacitive elements providing at least one capacitor having a first capacitor terminal and a second capacitor terminal, wherein the combined capacitance value of the at least five capacitive elements is greater than about 55.0 microfarads; and

a cover mountable to the case, the cover comprising:

a common cover terminal having a contact extending from the cover,

at least five capacitor cover terminals, each of the at least five capacitor cover terminals having at least one contact extending from the cover,

a first conductor capable of electrically connecting the first capacitor terminal of a capacitor provided by one of the at least five capacitive elements to one of the at least five capacitor cover terminals and a second conductor capable of electrically connecting the second capacitor terminal of the capacitor provided by one of the at least five capacitive elements to the common cover terminal, and

at least five insulation structures, wherein one of the five insulation structures is associated with one of the at least five capacitor cover terminals.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein each of the at least five insulation structures is cup shaped.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein each of the insulation structures is colored.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein at least two of the insulation structures are differently colored.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the at least one capacitor has a capacitance value in a range of about 2.5 microfarad to about 25 microfarad.

6. An apparatus comprising:

a case capable of receiving at least five capacitive elements, one or more of the capacitive elements providing at least one capacitor having a first capacitor terminal and a second capacitor terminal, wherein the combined capacitance value of the at least five capacitive elements is greater than about 65.0 microfarads; and

a cover mountable to the case, the cover comprising:

a common cover terminal having a contact extending from the cover,

at least five capacitor cover terminals, each of the at least five capacitor cover terminals having at least one contact extending from the cover,

a first conductor capable of electrically connecting the first capacitor terminal of a capacitor provided by one of the at least five capacitive elements to one of the at least five capacitor cover terminals and a second conductor capable of electrically connecting the second capacitor terminal of the capacitor provided by one of the at least five capacitive elements to the common cover terminal, and

at least five colored insulation structures, wherein one of the five colored insulation structures is associated with one of the five capacitor cover terminals.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein each of the at least five colored insulation structures is cup shaped.

8. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein at least two of the colored insulation structures are differently colored.

9. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the at least one capacitor has a capacitance value in a range of about 2.5 microfarad to about 25 microfarad.

10. An apparatus comprising:

a case capable of receiving at least five capacitive elements, one or more of the capacitive elements providing at least one capacitor having a first capacitor terminal and a second capacitor terminal, the at least one capacitor having a capacitance value in a range of about 2.5 microfarad to about 25 microfarad, wherein the combined capacitance value of the at least five capacitive elements is greater than about 55.0 microfarads; and

a cover assembly mountable to the case, comprising:

a common cover terminal having a contact extending from the cover,

at least five capacitor cover terminals, each of the at least five capacitor cover terminals having at least one contact extending from the cover,

a first conductor capable of electrically connecting the first capacitor terminal of a capacitor provided by one of the at least five capacitive elements to one of the at least five capacitor cover terminals and a second conductor capable of electrically connecting the second capacitor terminal of the capacitor provided by one of the at least five capacitive elements to the common cover terminal, and

at least five insulation structures, wherein one of the five insulation structures is associated with one of the five capacitor cover terminals.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein each of the at least five insulation structures is cup shaped.

12. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein each of the at least five insulation structures is colored.

13. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein at least two of the at least five insulation structures are differently colored.
