Abstract

A distributed processing system includes a first site and a second site, each containing at least one device having cache storage, nonvolatile storage, where, in response to moving a process running on the processor of the first site to the processor running on the second site, data in the cache storage of the first site is no longer accessed by the process, the data being read into the cache of the storage of the first site in response to the process accessing data in the non-volatile memory of the first site prior to being moved to the second site. A process running on the processor of the first site moving to the processor running on the second site and corresponding cache slots may be detected by parsing the VMFS containing virtual machine disks used by the process.

Claims (24)

1. A distributed processing system, comprising:

a first site containing at least one device having cache storage, nonvolatile storage, and at least one processor that accesses the cache storage of the first site and the non-volatile storage of the first site, wherein particular data is read into the cache storage of the first site in response to the at least one processor of the first site accessing the particular data in the non-volatile memory of the first site; and

a second site, coupled to the first site, containing at least one device having cache storage, nonvolatile storage, and at least one processor that accesses the cache storage of the second site and the non-volatile storage of the second site, wherein, in response to moving a process running on the at least one processor of the first site to the at least one processor running on the second site, a cache slot at the first site for the particular data is destaged from the cache storage of the first site.

2. The distributed processing system of claim 1 , wherein the particular data in the cache storage of the first site is transferred to the cache storage of the second site.

3. The distributed processing system of claim 2 , wherein the particular data is deleted from the cache storage of the first site after the transfer.

4. The distributed processing system of claim 2 , wherein in response to the process accessing a portion of the particular data that has not yet been transferred from the cache storage of the first site to the cache storage of the second site, the portion of the particular data is transferred to the cache storage of the second site prior to being accessed by the process.

5. The distributed processing system of claim 1 , wherein each of the sites includes at least one host processing device and at least one disk array storage device and wherein the process runs on at least one of the hosts.

6. The distributed processing system of claim 1 , wherein a process running on the processor of the first site moving to the processor running on the second site and corresponding cache slots are detected by parsing the virtual machine file system containing virtual machine disks used by the process.

7. A method of managing a distributed processing system, comprising:

providing a first site containing at least one device having cache storage, nonvolatile storage, and at least one processor that accesses the cache storage of the first site and the non-volatile storage of the first site, wherein particular data is read into the cache storage of the first site in response to the at least one processor of the first site accessing the particular data in the non-volatile memory of the first site;

providing a second site, coupled to the first site, containing at least one device having cache storage, nonvolatile storage, and at least one processor that accesses the cache storage of the second site and the non-volatile storage of the second site;

moving a process running on the at least one processor of the first site to the at least one processor running on the second site; and

causing a cache slot at the first site for the particular data to be destaged from the cache storage of the first site in response to moving the process from the first site to the second site.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the particular data in the cache storage of the first site is transferred from the cache storage of the first site to the cache storage of the second site.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the particular is deleted from the cache storage of the first site after the transfer.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein in response to the process accessing a portion of the particular data that has not yet been transferred from the cache storage of the first site to the cache storage of the second site, the portion of the particular data is transferred to the cache storage of the second site prior to being accessed by the process.

11. The distributed processing system of claim 7 , wherein a process running on the processor of the first site moving to the processor running on the second site and corresponding cache slots are detected by parsing the virtual machine file system containing virtual machine disks used by the process.

12. A non-transitory computer-readable medium containing software that manages a distributed processing system having a first site containing at least one device having cache storage, nonvolatile storage, and at least one processor that accesses the cache storage of the first site and the non-volatile storage of the first site and a second site, coupled to the first site, containing at least one device having cache storage, nonvolatile storage, and at least one processor that accesses the cache storage of the second site and the non-volatile storage of the second site, the software comprising:

executable code that reads particular data into the cache storage of the first site in response to the at least one processor of the first site accessing the particular data in the non-volatile memory of the first site;

executable code that moves a process running on the at least one processor of the first site to the at least one processor running on the second site; and

executable code that causes a cache slot at the first site for the particular data to be destaged from in response to moving the process from the first site to the second site.

13. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 12 , wherein the particular data in the cache storage of the first site is transferred from the cache storage of the first site to the cache storage of the second site.

14. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 12 , wherein the particular data is deleted from the cache storage of the first site after the transfer.

15. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 12 , wherein a process running on the processor of the first site moving to the processor running on the second site and corresponding cache slots are detected by parsing the virtual machine file system containing virtual machine disks used by the process.
