Abstract

The invention provides methods for determining the susceptibility of cancer patients to developing adverse reactions if treated with a telomerase inhibitor drug by measurement of telomere length in appropriate cells of the patient prior to initiation of the telomerase inhibitor treatment.

Claims (13)

1. A method of telomerase inhibition therapy for a human subject in need thereof, the method comprising:

administering to a human subject in need of telomerase inhibition therapy and susceptible to an adverse reaction from telomerase inhibition therapy at least about 1.6 mg/kg to about 20 mg/kg of GRN163L to a human subject on day 1 and on approximately day 8 of a 21 day cycle to inhibit telomerase and the proliferation of cancer cells in the human subject with a reduced risk of an adverse reaction selected from thrombocytopenia, anemia, leucopenia and neutropenia.

2. A method of telomerase inhibition therapy for a human subject in need thereof, the method comprising:

administering to a human subject in need of telomerase inhibition therapy and susceptible to an adverse reaction from telomerase inhibition therapy at least about 1.6 mg/kg to about 20 mg/kg of GRN163L to a human subject on day 1 and on approximately day 15 of a 28 day cycle to inhibit telomerase and the proliferation of cancer cells in the human subject with a reduced risk of an adverse reaction selected from thrombocytopenia, anemia, leucopenia and neutropenia.

3. A method of telomerase inhibition therapy for a human subject in need thereof, the method comprising:

administering to a human subject in need of telomerase inhibition therapy and susceptible to an adverse reaction from telomerase inhibition therapy about 1.6 mg/kg to about 20 mg/kg of GRN 163L to a human subject two times in the first week in a 14 day cycle inhibit telomerase and the proliferation of cancer cells in the human subject with a reduced risk of an adverse reaction selected from thrombocytopenia, anemia, leucopenia and neutropenia.

4. The method of any one of claims 1 - 3 , wherein the administering is of about 3.2 mg/kg to about 20 mg/kg to the subject.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the administering is of about 4.8 mg/kg to about 20 mg/kg to the subject.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the administering is of about 6.2 mg/kg to about 20 mg/kg to the subject.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the administering is of about 7.2 mg/kg to about 20 mg/kg to the subject.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the administering is of about 9 mg/kg to about 20 mg/kg to the subject.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the administering is of about 12 mg/kg to about 20 mg/kg to the subject.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the subject is being treated for a cancer selected from breast cancer, colon cancer, lung cancer, prostate cancer, testicular cancer, hepatocellular cancer, gastric cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, pharynx cancer, rectal cancer, pancreatic cancer, cervical cancer, ovarian cancer, liver cancer, bladder cancer, cancer of the urinary tract, thyroid cancer, renal cancer, skin cancer, brain cancer, carcinoma, melanoma, leukemia and lymphoma.
