Abstract

Described herein is a system including a patient support unit having a patient environment, a heating module, a sensor module, and a control system. The control system is configured to selectively operate the system in a pre-programmed cooling mode configured to disable the heating module while monitoring patient-specific data of the patient using the sensor module. Related apparatus, systems, methods and/or articles are described.

Claims (38)

1. A system comprising:

a patient support unit having a patient environment;

a heating module comprising a heater, one or more heater-related alarms configured to sound when a sensed heater condition falls outside of a programmed range, and a heating module controller operatively coupled to the heater, wherein the heater is configured to warm the patient environment;

a sensor module comprising one or more sensors and one or more controllers operatively coupled to the one or more sensors and to the heating module, wherein the one or more sensors are configured to measure patient-specific data of a patient in the patient environment; and

a control system comprising at least one processor, at least one memory coupled to the at least one processor and including at least one program stored thereon, and at least one input interface, wherein the control system is configured to selectively operate the system in a pre-programmed cooling mode configured to (i) automatically disable the heating module by switching it off and to disable one or more heater related controls while monitoring the patient-specific data of the patient using the sensor module and (ii) automatically disable the heater-related alarms when the system is selected to operate in the pre-programmed cooling mode, wherein the control system operates in the pre-programmed cooling mode until a user selection is received by the control system to exit the pre-programmed cooling mode.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more sensors comprise an air temperature sensor configured to measure air temperature within the patient environment.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more sensors comprise an oxygen sensor configured to measure oxygen content within the patient environment.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the oxygen sensor is coupled to a servo oxygen controller operationally coupled to an oxygen valve configured to deliver controlled amounts of oxygen to the patient environment.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more sensors comprise a humidity sensor configured to measure relative humidity within the patient environment.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more sensors comprise a skin temperature sensor configured to measure a skin temperature of a patient in the patient environment.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the patient environment is enclosed.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the patient comprises a premature or full-term newborn baby.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the heater comprises one or more of a main air heater, a mattress heater, a radiant heater, or a humidity heater.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor module further comprises one or more patient-related alarms configured to sound when a sensed patient-condition falls outside of a programmed range.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the patient-related alarms are maintained by the control system when the system is selected to operate in the cooling mode.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the cooling mode allows the patient in the patient environment to undergo cooling using an auxiliary cooling device while the patient-specific data of the patient is monitored.

13. A method comprising:

supporting a patient in a patient environment of an incubator, wherein the incubator comprises:

a heating module comprising a heater, one or more heater-related alarms configured to sound when a sensed heater condition falls outside of a programmed range, and a heating module controller operatively coupled to the heater, wherein the heater is configured to warm the patient environment;

a sensor module comprising one or more sensors and one or more controllers operatively coupled to the one or more sensors and to the heating module, wherein the one or more sensors are configured to measure patient-specific data of a patient in the patient environment; and

a control system comprising at least one display, at least one processor, at least one memory coupled to the at least one processor and including at least one program stored thereon, and at least one input interface; and

receiving a command by the control system to operate in a pre-programmed cooling mode configured to (i) automatically disable the heating module by switching it off and to disable one or more heater related controls while monitoring the patient-specific data of the patient using the sensor module and (ii) automatically disable the heater-related alarms, wherein the control system operates in the pre-programmed cooling mode until a user selection is received by the control system to exit the pre-programmed cooling mode; and

automatically monitoring the patient-specific data of the patient using the sensor module.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the one or more sensors comprise an air temperature sensor.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein automatically monitoring the patient-specific data of the patient comprises using the air temperature sensor to measure air temperature within the patient environment.

16. The method of claim 13 , wherein the one or more sensors comprise an oxygen sensor.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein automatically monitoring the patient-specific data of the patient comprises using the oxygen sensor configured to measure oxygen content within the patient environment.

18. The method of claim 16 , wherein the oxygen sensor is coupled to a servo oxygen controller operationally coupled to an oxygen valve configured to deliver controlled amounts of oxygen to the patient environment.

19. The method of claim 13 , wherein the one or more sensors comprise a humidity sensor.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein automatically monitoring the patient-specific data of the patient comprises using the humidity sensor to measure relative humidity within the patient environment.

21. The method of claim 13 , wherein the one or more sensors comprise a skin temperature sensor.

22. The method of claim 21 , wherein automatically monitoring the patient-specific data of the patient comprises using the skin temperature sensor to measure a skin temperature of a patient in the patient environment.

23. The method of claim 13 , wherein the patient environment is enclosed.

24. The method of claim 13 , wherein the patient comprises a premature or full-term newborn baby.

25. The method of claim 13 , wherein the heater comprises one or more of a main air heater, a mattress heater, a radiant heater, or a humidity heater.

26. The method of claim 13 , wherein the sensor module further comprises one or more patient-related alarms configured to sound when a sensed patient-condition falls outside of a programmed range.

27. The method of claim 26 , wherein receiving a command by the control system to operate in a pre-programmed cooling mode further comprises maintaining the patient-related alarms by the control system.

28. The method of claim 13 , further comprising cooling the patient using an auxiliary cooling device while automatically monitoring the patient-specific data of the patient using the sensor module.
