Abstract

Provided is an apparatus for disinfecting an object by at least partially removing a biologically-active contaminant there from. A housing encloses a disinfection chamber in which a portion of the object is to be received to be disinfected, and includes an inlet aperture through which the object is introduced to the apparatus. An ultraviolet light source emits ultraviolet light to be imparted on the portion of the object introduced to the disinfection chamber for deactivating at least a portion of the biologically-active contaminant present on the object. A controller controls operation of at least one of a feeder and the ultraviolet light to achieve a level of disinfection of the object, rendering the object suitable for use in a substantially-sterile application.

Claims (10)

1. A method of using an object for a medical application, the method comprising:

enclosing the object within a sleeve comprising a transparent portion through which the object within the sleeve is observable to render the object usable within the sleeve in a contagion-sensitive environment, wherein the object is an electronic device comprising a display screen, and said enclosing the electronic device within the sleeve comprises arranging the electronic device within the sleeve so the display screen is viewable through the transparent portion;

introducing the electronic device enclosed within the sleeve to a decontamination chamber into which an ultraviolet light source emits ultraviolet light;

exposing the sleeve enclosing the electronic device within the decontamination chamber to the ultraviolet light emitted by the ultraviolet light source;

subsequent to said exposing the sleeve enclosing the electronic device to the ultraviolet light, obtaining the electronic device enclosed within the sleeve in a decontaminated state to be used for its intended purpose within the contagion-sensitive environment while the electronic device is enclosed within the sleeve; and

after said obtaining the electronic device within the sleeve from the decontamination chamber in a decontaminated state, using the electronic device within the contagion-sensitive environment while the electronic device remains in the sleeve.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising enclosing the electronic device enclosed within the sleeve within an additional sleeve that is substantially transparent to ultraviolet light.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein said enclosing the electronic device enclosed within the additional sleeve comprises inserting the electronic device enclosed within the sleeve into an opening provided to the additional sleeve and then closing the opening to interfere with removal of the electronic device enclosed within the sleeve from the additional sleeve.

4. The method of claim 2 further comprising extracting the electronic device enclosed within the sleeve from the additional sleeve so the electronic device can be used while enclosed within the sleeve.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein said enclosing the electronic device within the sleeve comprises inserting the electronic device through an opening defined by the sleeve and closing the opening to secure the sleeve.
